Coweeman Jan. cow tag
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:12:35 PM »
My dad is taking me down to hunt the coweeman for my January rifle cow permit, he has only hunted the Green Mt. area. So, I was looking for a little advice on maybe which roads we should concentrate on, or maybe some tips on where you have seen elk during the earlier seasons. I only have 2 weekends to hunt because of school & fastpitch. I am really looking forward to getting my first elk. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks
The more boys I meet, the more I love my dog!!

There are elk all over the unit. I would try all roads. 1700 1600 6100. Look for one above the road.

I live right next to the unit.  If you get snow look low and where there is a grassy area.
Get up and glass.  You will have no problem finding elk.  If you run into a problem
let me know and i will be able to help.  Good luck and bring your binos.  Should
have no problem.  Can get into the unit off headquarter road or Kalama river.

You can be anywhere in that unit and get into Elk, shouldn't be a problem.  Snow will help but not needed, the pressure may have them still tucked in holes but you'll catch them slip up during the mornings, and evenings.  Lots of Elk in the Mulholland Creek area, glass the patchy jackfurs.  They also like it down in that lowland behind the dump, 1300 country.  Good luck.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

I drew that tag last year. elk were hanging out in nearly every clearcut. If you want it easy wait till you see one on the road. I hunted the 1700 road It only took about 15 min to fill my tag. Right now during the muzzleloader season all the elk are hiding, hard scout unless your pushing the thick stuff. Once they close the gates again they will be every were.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Does anyone know if there is any snow down there yet? I have a choice of shooting a 30-06 or 7mm mag. I shoot both well, which one do you think will get the job done without making to much damage? My dad isn't much help, he shoots a bow n arrow. I'm soo excited, only two more nights of no sleep!!! THANKS AGAIN!

No snow, but you guys should have no problem.  Been getting a bunch rain though the last couple days, Sunday is suppose to be sunny but pack raingear just in case.  Maybe the nice weather will have the Elk out and about.  Good luck, but I wouldn't think you need it.

Was in there in late nov with the muzzy. Was hunting off the toutle river side. Elk would not leave the timber had to get in there and push them around. Some of the guys in are camp got shots at bulls. Not one of us seen elk on the road. But with the locked gates they will be out in the open. If you dont have luck shooting one off the road. I would go off headquarters road should be able to get there from any acess point. Once your up off headquarters Glass at the very bottom of cuts. the elk like these areas. Once you find some could be miles off, drive over there for the shot. Also buy a map l.c. sportsman puts out a coweeman map that would help with the hunt a bunch.  Good luck

I hunted last Sun. & Mon. Had a shot on a big fat cow at first light but things didn't work out in my favor. :'(. We saw elk in just about every clear-cut opening morning, unfortunatly they were already dead. I passed on quite a few(taking the advice to shoot up hill & close to the road). Thanks for all the pointers, especially Tbar. Those elk were standing right in the middle of the intersection of the roads you told me about. I'm going back down tomarrow. It's my turn!
