Was in there in late nov with the muzzy. Was hunting off the toutle river side. Elk would not leave the timber had to get in there and push them around. Some of the guys in are camp got shots at bulls. Not one of us seen elk on the road. But with the locked gates they will be out in the open. If you dont have luck shooting one off the road. I would go off headquarters road should be able to get there from any acess point. Once your up off headquarters Glass at the very bottom of cuts. the elk like these areas. Once you find some could be miles off, drive over there for the shot. Also buy a map l.c. sportsman puts out a coweeman map that would help with the hunt a bunch.  Good luck

I hunted last Sun. & Mon. Had a shot on a big fat cow at first light but things didn't work out in my favor. :'(. We saw elk in just about every clear-cut opening morning, unfortunatly they were already dead. I passed on quite a few(taking the advice to shoot up hill & close to the road). Thanks for all the pointers, especially Tbar. Those elk were standing right in the middle of the intersection of the roads you told me about. I'm going back down tomarrow. It's my turn!

It's better to have a gun and not need it than to need one and not have it.                                                                             Local 66 sheetmetal workers

When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.
