cant find the animals, running out of areas to hunt
« on: July 10, 2007, 06:00:57 PM »
ive been hunting since i was 15 years old now im 38 and still havent downed a buck, i just started hunting elk the last 3 years and havent down one of those either. just started archery hunting hoping to better my luck, last year i stumbled across 3 doe but couldnt shoot them, and spooked out a 4x4 bull elk but no branched tag. now the owner of the land i was hunting on is closing it to hunting. does anyone have any ideas for a area that i can hunt where i wont regret hunting it?

Sounds like you are on the east side? For anyone to really point you in a direction they will need to know where you are and the general areas you want to hunt.

If starting out in archery I would suggest taking the first legal deer you can cleanly kill to get some success under your belt. As for elk, try to hunt either sex units until you gain some knowledge of the critters.

Good luck and feel free to ask questions.

If it has been that long and you haven't killed a buck I would head to the NE corner where the whitetails are thicker than fleas, do alot of preseason scouting to find a good spot and sit like a stump till a buck comes by.  Especially during the late season.

I would echo what ridgerunner said...there's flat out a lot of deer up there. there's lots of hunters too, but there's a ton of deer.
elk...don't know.

we have elk too, but there is a reason they only kill 50 elk in each unit....with 12k hunter days.

I have not shot a deer in a long time either, but i have passed on a lot up to an including a couple of nice 4points. If not seeing bucks in one area than move on.
