Snowy Owls (warning, pic heavy)
« on: December 22, 2011, 11:34:42 AM »
There have been quite a few snowy owls around and I haven't posted here in a while.  I went out two days shooting them.  If you ever want to see one, this is the year...

Sweet photos! They are one cool looking bird.
The grooming photo is cool. I also like the contrast between the green and the white on #1.

There's an article in today's Lewiston Tribune about snowy owl sightings.  The article said the lemming population crashed so they moving out searching for food.  Evidently this is common but this year is worse than others.  They had map with sightings.  Wenatchee, Umitalla area, Colville, Missoula, Bridgeport.  There have been sightings all the way down to Anatone and some even further south...Twin Falls.

Going to have to keep an eye out and see if I can find one and snap a few pics.

Btw...nice pics.

The best place to see them up close and guaranteed is at Ocean Shores.  It's about a mile hike out the spit on Damon Point and you'll see white things once you get out there.  The next place is at Boundary Bay just over the border in BC.  Just go to the end of 72nd St.  Oh, and bring your passport.  There are about 5-8 at Ocean Shores and 20-30 at Boundary Bay.  Skagit flats has some, as well as the Mansfield plateau.  There was one hanging out at the zoo this week too...
