I have the Sigma 70 - 300 (less than 200.00).  It is a good lens, but I really want a 500mm lens.  Just no way to buy one that is 3-5 grand.

I am also trying Borrowlenses.com.  You can rent a lens for a few days or a month to try it out.

By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

^^^what he said. what kinda of pics are you wanting to take?  I use barrowlense.com to try lenses out as well either before buying or if you got a special trip planned out and are in need of a certain lense that you wont always use.

I know being on the hunting forum here, you want to have a good wildlife lens... But.. the first lens to buy, period...that will be pretty versatile and flat out AMAZING....is the Nifty Fifty... 99$ lens... takes pictures that are worth a million dollars.

After that, yeah...something in the 300+ range. That 100-400 Zoom has always been on my wish list.

That is a fun lens. 50mm 1.8 for that money is really a really good deal. I have one an don't use it as much as I should.
One that I picked up a couple months ago was the 70-200 f4. Does lots of things very well. It is by far my favorite lense. but you are gonna drop 1k on it.
