It's official
« on: January 06, 2012, 01:45:54 AM »
I heard back from a Bio yesterday and I think I pin pointed where would be one of the best bets for this years mule deer hunt in the wenaha  :IBCOOL: I found a spot that warrents a couple cams and some of my minerals to see what I can muster up!
If you are familiar with the wenaha it's steep and nasty for the most part! This spot I am looking at is steep on 3 sides but is about a 1/2 square mile of irregular gradual slope with a north facing slope and some cover in the basin and open hill to glass from  :dunno: what you think.
It's going to be some serious footwork but coupled with my back getting better and my new years goal and I am to say the least itchy to get out there! I just hope it will turn something up for me  ;)
this place is about 2.5-3 mile from the nearest road and 2000 ft down so I'm hoping that if I do find one it's far enough from everyone that he wont get bothered and I can hunt the area virtually alone.

does anyone know what the best map would be showing trails and streams and landmarks.  :dunno:

good luck to all this upcoming year!  :hello:

Nice

I us USGS for everything.  For the most part they are fairly accurate.  I sometimes double up with greentrails but not sure if they have those for the Weneha.

I'm gonna follow you in there... I know that you have enough deer goodies do draw in all 10 bucks that live in the wenaha. :chuckle:

The USFS map is my favorite because it has trails, topo, and is pretty detailed.  Check it out and see what you think.  When you are looking online for it make sure you search for prices.  I can't remember if I bought mine from USFS site or another site, but there was about a 3-4 dollar difference.  Not a big deal, but it saves you a couple bucks.  Good luck, there are a few dandies down there.

I know the numbers are low but I know of no where else to make this hunt  :dunno: I don't really want to jump on the band wagon and do the entiat areas. I hope I can find some fruit where I'm planning on going! Plus I have a advantage I can see over the buck brush  :chuckle: :chuckle:  :sry: JK

If its state land I can get work maps from the state, much more detailed than what you get at the store. And I can get all the layers you need or dont need. Let me know

Not saying that is a bad thing. When you harvest a buck after putting that much work into it. You appreciate it that much more

:yeah:  Good luck 400.  If you can pull it off and find a pocket that holds deer, you should be able to go back there and kill one every year...  In theory anyway... :dunno:

There are some monster bucks in the wenaha. Most guys can't find them during deer season, but elk season starts and they all pop out. Some nasty ground, but worth it if you can find a buck. Good luck to ya. That's definetly a spot that youd want to hold out for a big buck. Especially since a nasty pack out! Good luck and share some trail cam pics!

 when I killed my bull I loved the homework more than the hunt and harvest now that I look back at it  ;)
