Blued or Stainless?
« on: January 11, 2012, 08:46:56 AM »
I am about to buy my first muzzy and I think I will get the Bighorn but I only see stainless ones.  I dont see the point in stainless I mean we all spend money on camo so why would we run through the wood with a flashy gun or does it matter?  Blued or stainless what one did you choose?

The "shine" from your stainless gun is not going to scare any animals.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

:yeah: It cracks me up when my buddies make fun of my "purdy" A-Bolt....whatever, it kills the same.

There is not doubt in my mind... Stainless - especially considering the environment that you live.

Stainless will not cause the animal any notice - movement will.

All of the powders we shoot in a ML will cause some amount of corrosion including BH - stainless is much more resistant..

Go stainless a ya Go Cougs!
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

Dad never liked guns that were 'shiny', but I always figured it was easier to camouflage a stainless gun than corrosion-proof a blued one.. my black diamond is stainless, and so is my model 70... but both have more of a frosted, not high polish look to them..

If the shine bugs you, you could try that treatment Oxynate-84(?), as I've heard it is producing some good results giving stainless a blued look.  Just what I've read/heard--been trying to find pictures myself.  Also might look at gun-kote.

I have hunted with both for many years. When it comes to big game it does not matter. When calling for predators that the only time I tend to favor a blued gun, because a stainless will get picked up by there eyes when they are heading to the call.

get a stainless time spent cleaning the outside should be spent cleaning the inside of a muzzleloader  :twocents:

Ive had both, by far the stainless. Black powder will do nasty things to a blued muzzy.

Even if it bothers you, (I don't muzzy hunt but I like stainless 10x more for it's properties) you can still paint it. Or is this you don't wanna cover up something as pretty as a stainless?  :dunno:

Stainless is too flashy in my opinion.  Not flashy like with the sun, just flashy syle wise.  Whichever you prefer will work for ya

I have both them, both are good, but don't buy SS thinking that you don't need to clean it. It will rust the same as carbon steel with the use of black powder, I've never shot any of the fake powders so I can't say about them. The benefit of SS is rust resistent to rain and snow.
