Removing rifle stock
« on: January 11, 2012, 08:21:11 PM »
Removed my rifle stock, adjust my trigger, install the stock back, went back to range cant hit nothing check my zero and rifle shoots 6" right :dunno: rifle has bedded stock check the screws with torque driver. Removing and installing your stock can shift your zero?  Some one please chime in.  Thanks

It is very rare that removing a barreled action from a stock will change point of impact that much. I've removed several and never had one bit of change or only a very very little. I would take it apart again and reassemble. I would think that there is some something binding. Otherwise, in the movement, did you jar the scope/rings at all? That said, what was the trigger pull before you adjusted it?

I ask, because a good shot with a consistent trigger pull will often be able to print good groups, but a changed set of characteristics of the trigger can make you shoot different.

Yes it can. Pull it back apart, make certain everything is clean....especially nooks and crannies in the stock. Slip the action back into the stock and start all the screws. Once all the screws are just barely touching, stand the rifle on its butt and give it a light tap to seat any space in the recoil lug. Now tighten the front screw. Move to the rear.....it will not need to be as tight. If you have a middle screw it also does not need to be ultra tight. If you have an inch lb wrench, go to about 45 on the front and 30 on the rear. Be sure the barrel channel is clean and lastly make sure the action screw is not hitting the bolt......that can cause nightmares.

Don't forget to check and make sure your barrel is still floating.

Steve,
i did not mess with the scope, the scope is mark 4 with tactical rings, barrel is floating, trigger was 3.5lbs after adjsutement little over 1lbs, i did notice when taking of the stock the screws did not feel tight but when i installed stock back i torqued it to 50 so maybe rifle has little different shooting characteristics??  Live and learn i guess

If you have an indicator, check the stock/barrel as you snug it up....just because its bedded, does not mean its bedded perfectly.
