COWEEMAN RESIDENTS ARE HOT !!!!
« on: January 13, 2012, 08:30:12 AM »
A buddy of mine just called me this morning .. They still had a tag to fill and got it done around 8am this morning ... When they woke up this morning they were reading the local paper Kelso and come to find out the local residents are disgusted on how many elk carcasses and gutpiles their were being left off the sides of the roads and in the middle of the roads ... now its hard to say if it is whitemen or indians but either way I think it is disrespectful to all residents and other hunters to practice such activity... This leaves a bad taste in everyone mouth ..He is bringing me the paper home with him so I can read it .. :bdid: :dunno:

Good luck with that....   :chuckle:

This issue is the same in my mind as beer cans and other garbage being left in the woods by all users.  Unfortunately, it is easy to point to a single user group as responsib;le for this garbage.  Seems to me the carcass weighs a lot less going back to the woods than getting it home, why can't people at least drag it off out of sight?  Just frickin lazy!  I had to launch my boat past two deer carcasses laying on the ramp at Borst Park one year.

To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Yeah, it is getting pretty bad around here.  I don't blame Weco or surrounding Timber companies for locking their land up.  Just about every gate at the end of a paved road is loaded with trash.  I guess thats better and easier to clean than off a landing way out in boonies!

Not sure but I thought the post said he moved them off the road with a shovel

That's what he said initially, then on page three he changed his mind.

Yelm, nice job on the cow.  I really hope you guys pushed the gutpile off to the side of the road and didn't leave laying in the middle as can be seen in the picture.  Spur road or not, just common courtesy

They are trying to completely clean out that unit...  Sad really....  Why are they doing this, is it WEYCO's lobbying?  It is not management, there's plenty of feed in there for the elk.

Yes Weyco is pushing for the increased numbers. And Olympia is buying into the lopsided numbers.

NO I LEFT THE GUTPILE IN THE SPUR ROAD!!

Just read the paper, it has more to do about the ethics of the timing of the hunt more than anything.  Only thing mentioned about gut piles was that the guy that found them said they was so close to a paved road that they had to been shot from it.  The article has to do more about the fact that the timing of this late cow hunt being the worst time of the year for pressuring elk, and also the fact that he found fetuses in both gut piles.  he thinks the hunts should be held earlier in the year.

I could see an argument being made for bad timing and stressing the herd more but fetuses in the gutpiles?  Who cares?  Two months ago those same fetuses would have been in there, just a lot smaller and harder to find for someone with, apparently, way too much time on their hands.   :twocents:

Most gutpiles are consumed within days by predators.  I don't see an issue with leaving them in a location that's not readily visible from a road.

I live in Toutle, so I see a lot of hunters in my area, I know when hunting season comes around and I am talking all user groups I see garbage, bones piles and gut piles left all over the place. The hwy 504/505 camping area was discusting this year. In the toutle unit after the late rifle cow tages there was gut piles all over the place, I was up there in the late archery cow hunt with my Dad and must of counted 20 gut piles in diffrent areas. As hunters we need to do a better job representing us to others, I was sad to see this. Its gets worse ever year.

After the WDFW reduces the herd, and everyone complains about how tough it is to harvest an animal in this state.
Seems like they pick a different herd every 3 years to reduce, just to make some happy, by giving out cow permits.
Then everyone complains about the regs...
Why not increase the season to keep the harvest up ?,
hunters are happy with more days afield, harvest increases, and cows remain in the herd to produce "calf recruitment" and future harvest,
instead they kill the cows, reduce calf recruitment and herd size, reduce opportunity, and pretend they are helping the herd ?
Oh, ya, people are just lazy, and want to get an elk with minimal effort, or complain that they have to choose a weapon, or only get a few days to hunt, yet rarely get away from a road to leave their gut-piles and carcases on...  :bash:

The gutpiles dont really bother me.Especially the one in the pics that were shown.Yotes will take care of that in a hurry. Its not like it was on a county rd where a ton of non hunters will see it. I do have a problem with the stacks of bones, rib cages, hides, etc. That are in front of many gates,on the rds, just of county rds.etc.They wont disapear anytime soon so they will be an eyesore for a longtime. The issue around here is terrible too.Just take a spin out Salmon creek and some of the other rds in the area.

Technically you are right, but i think there is a difference between the pressure that is given to a pregnant cow in January as opposed to two or three months ago.  Winter time is among us and the fetus's are getting good in size.  The cows need much more rest and forage to sustain themselves and their calfs.  I personally dont believe in these January tags and dont put in for them for that reason.  If the WDFW wants to thin the heard, have these tags in Aug and Sept.  I think all hunting should be done by the end of November, i think you would see healthier elk the less pressure that is put on them.

Their rest will be short lived, won't be long tell they are chased from here to the ends of the earth tell they drop those antlers.  Then and only then will they be completely useless, and not worthy of being chased.  That is until September of course.  The life of a Elk...   and we wonder why they split as soon they catch wind or a glimpse of us, unlike a deer thats sometimes a lil more curious.  :chuckle:

Why cant the fish and game lengthen general seasons and get rid of all the "extra" seasons.  I think bow should Sept 1 - Sept 30, muzzle loader from Oct1 - Oct 31 and Rifle form November 1 - November 30 and call it a year.  I think the success rates would go up like they want, but the elk would all in all be much healthier due to less pressure throughout the year.

Sounds  like this was blown out of porportion, gut piles dont last more than 1 day, and most hunters wouldnt leave a gut pile in the middle of a road.

It is not being blown out of proportion.  If you read the article the gut piles were not the problem.  It was mentioned but the controversy was the idea of having elk tags in January.

Unfortunately, success rates are not what they want to go up, revenue is their only concern.
More money in special permits and Cow tags than in general season (unless it is in towns that have hunters visiting)

Sounds like you boys need  some wolves over there to take care of the problem.  They will eat the elk before  you kill them and clean up after you get what is left over from their feast.....
A pack of wolves I think wouldn't last very long over here, Way to much land access and way to many trigger happy (anti wolf) hunters.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

Unfortunately, success rates are not what they want to go up, revenue is their only concern.
More money in special permits and Cow tags than in general season (unless it is in towns that have hunters visiting)
They are only managing their $$$, not their sense...  :twocents:

Exactly, i know what they truely want, i was just refering to what they say they want.  When you live smack dab in the middle of it all, you really see how ignorant some of their ideas really pan out to be.

Deerthug, you should listen to Arteman, we call them monster coyotes over here.  We just think you eastsiders have the largest coyotes ever. :chuckle:

Why not leave the area as you found it? Or better than you found it? Same goes for guys relieving themselves on a landing or road and not even trying to bury it.

And personally, I feel those St Helens elk are hunted waaaaaay too hard. Legally from the first week of September to now. I just cannot see where that makes any sense. We all on here say how much we respect and love our elk. I dislike what the mangement plan is up there very much.  :twocents:
Can't we all just get along?

Thats how I run ... I never litter or try leaving evidence I was ever there... now as far as the elk go I can say they have alot of elk in this unit !!! we seen herds in the yards which are causing the problems for land owners...I seen mass sign up every road I went up ....and this is why I chose to go on that hunt toward the end ...so I did not have to deal with other people and my plan worked out great ...We never seen one other hunter besides ourselves and that was sweet!!! The dept definately needs start managing elk , not money  :yeah:
