archery target

I am in need of a new archery target since mine no longer stops all my arrows. I have been looking around and have a question. Some block targets say they are for broadheads which would be nice, but does that mean I shouldn't shoot field points at it too?

No you can shoot field tips into a broadhead target. Get a 18-1 rineheart best target out there for both in a block style target. around 100.00 and 1 year warrenty. Shoot it all out and they send you a new one free

That sounds great. Now that the girlfriend got her bow and will be practicing, the target is going to get extra work so I need something reliable.

I shoot a lot and will burn threw 2 or 3 normal targets a year like the blocks or the yellow jackets. I like the yellow jackets but no block can stand up to the abuse the rineharts take.

I've got a great bag target for field points. I go to Wholesale Sports and buy the Morrell replacement bag for their yellow target - $14.95. Then I take it to Freddy's and ask the manager if I can fill it with recycled plastic grocery bags and they take me into the back room and let me at 'em. I really pound them in hard, stand on them, push in as many as I can possible squish in there. When I can't possibly get any more in, I close the top with the zip ties that come with it.

You can do it cheaper with $0.25 grain bags at the local feed store, but they break down really fast out in the elements. The Morrell bags don't.

I have made tha same kind of bag targets out of big burlap bags... lots of plastic and a couple pices of carpet. Works pretty good.

last block target i had was a cardboard box about 3' x 3' x 1.5' went to home depot and bought half dozen of the great stuff expanding insulating foam filled the box up about 2/3 capacity let the foam cure for about a week, traced around the inside hole or a roll of duct tape for target spots and shot it.

its not fancy or real pretty but it works, im not sure how it lasts compared to "the block" or other commercial targets, but when i start getting close to blowing through it (takes a long time to get here) all i have to do is shoot some new foam in the chewed up spots and presto brand new target

We have the "great stuff foam to repair old 3D targets before. works ok... A great broad head target is the 2 in pink insulation foam. They come in 2ftx8ft and 4x8  a 2x8 will make one target cut into 2x2  squares then duct tape together. then duct tape to a couple a stakes and put into the ground. They will stop field points or broad heads. they actually stop broad heads better.

If you know any saltwater fishermen with boats ask them to be on the lookout for a floating piece of dock foam. I found a couple; each measures about 2' x 4' x 1' and they stop broadheads well.

A word of caution about plastic-filled bag targets; a hunting-weight broadhead-tipped arrow will blow right through them.

Thanks, SpecialT. I have a rineheart and an older broadhead target but I like the idea of a cheaper home made version that I can shoot up and then make another.  Trying to keep my rinheart for field tips only.

As you shoot up a pink foam target you can keep adding layers so that it keeps it stopping power. I've had 2 for about 10 years. they don't get a lot of use but i always shoot a bunch of broad heads before the beginning of each season. One caution on white dock foam. It will stop broad heads, but if you shoot much you will have little white snow all aver before too long.

How many layers of the 2" foam do you use?  I am thinking about 2 feet worth or 12 layers.

4. you really only need 4 one pice of 2x8 will make 1 target. if you want to you can double it up so its easier to stand up. Broad heads will stop before they exit. feild points will stick out the other side but will stop the arrow. A pice of 4x8 2in pink will run you $25. I made 2 so that i could shoot up and down a hill. I shot up the hill to a target with 5-6 arrows then retrieved. Then shot down the hill and repeated.  Its awsome if you have a steep hill or ravine near by you can do it in.  Good way to estimate range and the effect of angles.  When ductaping the targets together i used a 6in pice of conduit and taped to the top of the target, then pounded in 2 3' pices of rebar 2 targets can run you less than 35$

My very favorite target for field points is a gunny sack stuffed with two old Coleman sleeping bags.  Have never been able to get an arrow to even poke out the back side, and they pull with 1 finger and thumb!  Probably wouldn't hold up outside on the wetside though, I use it in the shop during the winter and it spends all summer outside.

Gunny sack stuffed with T-shirts, or painter rags work very well also. (again for field points, and dry)
