Deer camp is in North Central South Carolina and the rest is in lowcountry South Carolina very near the coast.

No offense but that house deserves better. I hate seeing those houses without a looooong driveway and a sprawling plantation. Wish I was actually from somewhere lol. Stupid army.

Which house?   Explain yourself.

The larger white house was built on the ground you see in the pic in 1807.  I think its doing pretty damn good.
The smaller white house with the dock was built in the early 1900s beside the larger white house.  It was put in a trailer and moved 25 miles to the river in 1978.  We kept it original and moved it with a cost greater than it's worth, to keep it how it was built.
The slave house was built...well...during the slave time era.  It's the only house that has stood through 300+ years of hurricanes and any other natural disasters that have happened in those years.
What else would you like?

I honestly have no idea when part of our family got the plantation.  I have heard stories about it that include 4 generations before mine, so a while, but not sure on exact dates and time frame.

The large white house was bought in the 60s.

92xj I was commenting on the big house that appears to be pretty close to the neighbors. I meant that I always envision those houses being back a ways from the road with a longer driveway so you get a feel for the size of the estate. It's one of my favorite styles of house.

I grew up down south and have a sister-in-law just north of Georgetown in Litchfield.  Her husband's family has the original governor's mansion in Vance and we hunt ~1200 acres there - looks identical.  We also go to Lincolnton, GA to hunt whitetails on my brother's land ~400 acres.  I am trying to get them to come west for elk and mule deer....

That's awesome.  Spent plenty of days and more nights in Litchfield as well as Pawley's Island.  The river house and the plantation are both on the Black river down there.  You ever go out inshore fishing down there?  I grew up on a boat hammering the spottails and flounder and giggin at night around muddy bay.

Screw you thousand year rainfall  :(

Water level at the river house just hit the tin on the walls of the boat shed. Feet and feet in the river house. haven't got word of the slave houses. They have to be gone, it's even farther down river than the river house. The big white house in town has water to the door. It's amazing all the hurricanes these places have survived, we've never had water and flooding as bad as right now. This water is erasing our nation's history, memories of a great life growing up and the greatest vacation spot.  Christmas time will be hard work or cleaning up and trying to salvage what we can. Sucks.

Just got word of emergency closure of hunting for the next days 5, for now. The animals are all screwed up without their normal ranges. Also seeing dead ones floating by that couldn't find dry land.

What an odd feeling to have dealing and watching so many fires here and then having so much family property destroyed and to hear the tears on the phone because of water back home.

Humbling

Awesome pics, sorry to hear about the damage that the storms are causing to your families land. I grew up with hurricanes in Florida and have seen the destruction they have caused, its a good thing Southern people are a resilient as they are. Hope the water recedes soon...

Some of the Gullah lowcountry. Love that area. I have a stepson and daughter-in-law in Charleston. Got 24" of rain last week in 24 hours. Frightening but they're OK. A lot of folks aren't.

Wow! That's a lot of water. This is why you don't live in a flood plain. If you do you better have flood insurance. Dams are man made and can fail........

This house is not in a certified flood plain and the water is not from dams breaking. No dam within 100 miles of there and no dams on the river this house sits on, or in now. Not even a river or creek that feeds this river has a dam. This is the direct result of 23.2 inches of rain in 48 hours on this house and 20+" of rain in every direction from this house.

I completely agree with what you are saying, but neither of those apply to this location, oddly enough.

Very interesting. I guess there's some truth to these 1000 year floods...... I can't even imagine the much rain even being born and raised in the PNW.

Growing up and living in south and north Carolina, we heard word of 500 year floods ( even in the mountains, living of top of a mountain), especially dealing with insurance folks but never saw anything close to it. Calling this a 1000 year flood is insane. Having been through a ton of hurricanes, this house has never seen anything like this. The biggest flood the family has seen, even my grandfather who put this house out there, was about 4 inches over the walkway out to the dock you see in the pictures. This river is influenced by the ocean so there is a high and low tide, this morning they measured the water at 22 feet above extreme high tide. The water is still rising as the state drains. A picture an hour ago shows the water at the top of the screen porch, 6 or so inches higher than the picture I posted.

Cool pics, love the medicine womans house reminds me of the cabin I played in as a child and intended to run away and live in.  I hope the waters go down and everything is ok.  I have been through some pretty scary floods lost all my stuff but the houses made it through.
