Hunting Camp

I have been archery elk hunting for the last few years, I started off solo but now have 3 to 5 guys hunting in camp and growing. I have been wondering if we would be better off pooling our money and buy camp gear and food. How does your camp work?

In our camp we all put $300 into a "camp pot" before we even leave for the hills.  Everything we need (gas, food, supplies) comes out of the pot.  At the end if there's anything left it gets divided back up.   It's the fairest way we could think of doing it.

First off welcome to the site

When I do it, it's with trusted friends. We add up all the bills at the end and then we split it in half. Note I said trusted friends If I did not trust them I would get the money up from before we even left. I know the guys I hunt with and there would never be any problem with paying a even share at the end.

First order of business, welcome to the site.  We usually have 4 of us that always make it to early archery elk camp, and then a couple maybes every year.  Between the original 4, we usually coordinate before hand on who's bringing what gear.  I usually bring my 5th wheel & canvas tent, others will bring camp kitchen, cook stove, propane, small storage tents, etc.  Usually, my wife will shop for main meals for all of us, and then we just split up the food bill at camp.  She did this a few years ago and everyone voted to have her continue (god I love her!!!).  Someone else will bring propane for cooking & lights.  Again, we will split the cost for propane.  Depending on who's bringing their rigs, we pay for gas/diesel ourselves.  If we have a rider, they usually pitch in for fuel costs.  But, usually three out of the four all bring our own rigs, so splitting the fuel bill usually isn't in the cards.  If we have left over food (that won't spoil), we usually just leave it in the 5th wheel until our next hunting adventure.

I dont like being in a group any larger than 4  we always plan our hunts early and splitting costs is a good idea but make sure the people are close friends.

My Dad and I just split the cost... Then we meet our buddies up there and they do their own thing... Each group splits gas.... They all split food... Dad and I are kinda the outcast because we are gone before most are awake and not back at camp till after dark.... When some of them are about to passout....

Same as above. We have 12 guys in our camp. Everyone puts in 100$ that covers the costco run fuel and every thing else but beer. If we run out everyone puts in a little more. Been doing it like that for 16 yrs works great for us.

Typically, at my elk camp, I buy all the groceries and other supplies before I head up to set up camp. When the other members show, we split the bill. If we need more supplies as the season goes on, we split that too.

This last year, had one member that didn't put his share of the fundage into the kitty.
He will not be returning to the camp.

We have from 3-8 people in camp, we all make meals all year long then vacuum seal them for a quick fix at the end of a long fun day. We find out how many people are going to be in camp then split the meals up equal between every one. we bring our own snacks and lunch items. then we split all the gas between every one.
This has always worked well for us.

Much like the other posts, we split everything... except booze, its BYOB. Its usually just my hunting partner and I, some years my Dad or his Dad will go with us. One thing we do that hasn't been mentioned is also split the meat at the end of the year. That way someone who has put in just as much time, money and effort still has something to show for it at the end of the year. It works for us but again we are a small group.

Get the money up front for everything...even with good life long friends; It's so much easier and friends stay good friends. Every expense gets pulled out of the pot

One guy buys all the groceries for the week. Then we split it 12 ways. Works out to be about 40$ then you bring your own drink. Oh, and each person is in charge of one dinner. You don't go hungry and you don't break the bank.

We basically do everything solo except food.  Food is a evenly split bill between all.

My partner and i start cooking and freezing dinners about a week before we meet up at the campsite. Then its just heat and eat after a hard day of hunting. All the camp gear is split between us. Too much for one p/u to handle with your food and personal gear. We only run propane, no gens so no gas, its a 15 gal tank so we only need to fill that about every 3rd year so its cheap. We just split the list. i bring eggs he brings bacon etc. beer, liquor whatever we bring we share. I go home from elk camp with pretty much enuff to get me thru deer as well. We are never going hungry. I like the idea of rotating the daily cooking duties and menus. everyday youre sampling someones else specialty.
