7mm, but which mag?
« on: March 09, 2012, 05:07:06 PM »
I've decided that I have a short range brush gun, a varmint gun, a pistol, and shortly a shotgun. I think to round out my basics I need a longer range rig. I'm looking to get better at shooting past my current limits (250-300.) I decided I like the 7mm and want a magnum cartridge in the chambering. I want to know what is easiest to find ammo for off the shelf, (I will be reloading soon but being able to walk into a store and buy some ammo would be nice.) and who you guys would buy if you had a strict budget of 750 for the gun itself. (I know ammo will surpass that number quickly but I can't use that with the wife this time, I already taught her too much  :chuckle: )

So the Rem Mag in tikka looks decent and I know tons of people that love them. How is the trigger out of the box? Are they adjustable?

I went round and round on that very question a few years ago.  I ended up with a Rem 700 XCR.

I got to the point where I closed my eyes, had them hand me rifles and piced the 700 just because of how it felt.  No regrets.

7mm Remington Magnum would probably be the easiest ammo to find of any of the magnum 7's, and cheapest too.

Yep...$20-25/box, 150 grain factory core-lokt will shoot 5-6 in groups at 400 as long as you want to keep shooting.

Great triggers and yes they adjust. Think it's 2-4 lbs, I just bought another one last week

439.00 for a stainless Remington 700 and the scope combo in 7mm Magnum at our local Bi-Mart. Leaves you some extra $$$ for optics.

I must one day make the mecca and see this "Bi-Mart" for myself. I love the fact that you can do so much to remington 700's and Savages but I can't find a local gunsmith. I hear rumors of a few that are less than a half hour away from myself but I fear they all hide at this "Bi-Mart" Place. Or they are hanging out with bigfoot and the coyotes.  :chuckle: Carp, with all these Tikkas you keep buying, do you get them at wholesale prices yet?

My vote is for the 7mm rem mag. When you do start reloading check out the nosler accubond 160. Its a great long range hunter

The 160 Accubond works wonders on Rockchucks when launched from a 7mm Ultra Mag case, beautiful air. Like a rag doll Apollo moon shot. I need a cold shower after typing that! :chuckle:

Bigger, I was thinking about the 7mm RUM but it seems like it may be a dying cartidge. Not too much of a worry if I'm reloading but I'd like it to take off a bit better first. That's got to be a mean cartridge. Was it a pain working up a load for it? Heard getting all the powder to ignite can be kind of a pain.

I just stuff mine with RL-25, it's super Accurate, flat and fast! I have a soft spot for the 7mm Magnum though. My first rifle I purchased was a new Rem700 7mm Magnum BDL when I was 15. I worked all summer. Handed my father the cash, walked into the gun store. I pointed out the one I wanted and the scope along with several boxes of ammo and my father made the purchase. I took it home put it all together and leaned it in the corner next to my bed and I can't even recall the hours I sat and stared at that rifle waiting for hunting season.

Funny thing was I had to check out my BB rifles from my father, I couldn't have them in my room. Yet, here I was at 15 with my rifle in my room and the boxes of shells stacked next to it at 15 years old. So a day or two after I had it I asked my dad. Why was it I can have a magnum rifle and the ammo for it in my room and not my BB guns. My father was reading the paper, he looked over the paper and said. " I would like to see you try to get away with shooting the neighbors windows out with that thing". And with that he went back to his paper.

The rest is history, that rifle was a elk and Mulie killing machine, when I started reloading by myself a year later. I loaded the 175gr Nosler Partition and flattened everything I hit with it. It's a great cartridge.
