ID Elk Habitat Project

There was an article in today's Lewiston Tribune about a group of 7 guys working in ID to create elk habitat.  They are working with the USFS and ID F&G to clear brush from about 75 acres to create elk browse.  They hope their efforts will help the elk fatten up for winter.

They are working in the upper Clearwater basin.  They are looking for volunteers to assist with their project.  They have an outfitter who will be setting up a base camp and food will be provided.  From what the article said the only stipulation is that you have to attend a training session for CPR and first aid before you can participate.  Also you have to attend FS training to operate a chainsaw.    They are hoping to start about the 14th of Apr for about 10-14 days.

Maybe talk to the Forest Service (maybe even RMEF).  I know that in the past there were 4 elk habitat projects in Olympic National Forest.  Things may have changed since then, though.

It says they originally approached the ranger of the Lochsa district to work on cutting down trees encroaching on a meadow.  He told them that clearing the environmental hurdles would take quite a while but he had an already approved brush clearing project in a meadow near the original meadow.  So they started with that.  The article doesn't really say how they moved on to the new location/project.

The gamie who always checks our camp has told us he wishes the reprod would get thinned to help increase feed. I've often thought of doing my own thinning!
