Was flipping through the Backpacker gear edition today while I was waiting for the car to get worked on.  Saw it got good reviews.

Not a light-weight model, but still feels like half the weight of what I was using (a Petzl "Zoom" from the 1980's). If run on bright mode, it's got twice the lumens of anything else REI sells. It also has a continuous dimming mode for saving batteries but also fine-tuning how much light you want.

Am I reading that right, 75-80 hours runtime on high with 200 lumens? That's pretty impressive. I'll have to get one sometime.

Anyone figure out how to activate either  LED function without cycling thru others? Most aggravating issue I have had with any of the lights, having to click your way thru to the option you want....

Nah, not THAT amazing! If you click on the link I posted, then click on "light selector", there's a graph that compares the capabilities of the Black Diamond models. The Icon on full power (200 lumens or supposedly 100 meters) goes for 20+ hours. When using the main lamp, you can adjust the power up or down depending on how much light you want and how long you want your batteries to last. There also a "proximity" mode that uses two smaller lamps that are easy on your batteries.

Iceman, the red LEDs ("night vision") can be accessed directly from the off position by holding down the power button for 3 seconds, then releasing. It remains in night-vision mode the next time you turn it on. To return to the main lamp, hold the power button down 3 seconds.

Thanks pope. We have used BD lights for years, but every time I try a newer version the cycling function is maddening on many lights. I would rather multiple switches, one for each bulb...

I've gone through several brands of headlamps, Petzel, BD among others both bulb and LED. All decent brands. Then I got a Fenix brand headlamp and also a small rechargeable. These are bar none the
best lights I have owned. The headlamp is outstanding on how bright it is and how far the light goes. It has 3 output settings. On high I can see my black dog  at the end of my 300 foot driveway when it is pitch black out, no ambiant or city lights. I use it quite often and have yet to replace the batteries. I would recomend this brand if anyone is shopping around.

I have two head lamps. One for around camp when I need to just see what is imediately around me and one in my pack for those hikes out in the dark. Huskemaw makes a head lamp that is just purely awesome. It boast a 100 yard range. And even thou it is hard to judge distance in the dark I can se forever and my friends can see me coming from a mile away.
If its brown knock it down
