Stoeger M2000 Turkey: Part 1 Review
« on: March 30, 2012, 12:13:17 AM »
Well yesterday was my bday and I was able to pick up the new shotgun. This is a m2000 turkey 2 3/4 or 3" 12g with a 24" barrel. After I posted I was getting one, I got about 12 pm's to do a write up on it. So I wanted to take the time to do it for the members that have asked.

I bought this shotgun as mainly a predator calling gun. If it will out pattern my bps I will use it for turkey hunting as well. I wanted a light weight semi auto. I run 3" 4 buck and 00 buck when calling for predators.

I will do this write up on a 1-10 scale 1 being poor and 10 being perfect. I will do a second part in the next week or so when I find some time to shoot it on paper. This write up is just for the first thoughts and fit and feel.

Weight: The manufactures weight is listed as 6.7 pounds with the 24" barrel. I found this to be spot on! This gun came in at 6.68 pounds on my scale with the modified choke in and right at 6.7 pounds with the extended x full turkey choke in.
10/10 score for weight.

Finish on the gun: I am really supprised how nice the camo is on this gun. It has a nice pattern to it a little bit glossy for my taste but nice lines and the paint is nice and smooth.
9/10

Ease of operation/fit: This gun fits me like most do. A little short on the stock I solve this problem with a limbsaver slip on recoil pad. I have them on a lot of guns from 223-my magnums I am 6'1 and like a little longer LOP. The pistol grip has a little grip to it and fits real nice in my hand. The throat of pistol grip is a little thicker and fits me just perfect. I don't have super big hands yet the trigger comes up nice on my trigger finger. People with smaller hands might have a little trouble reaching the trigger. Most shooters with avg sized hands will find this gun to fit them well. The release button is very stiff as with most new semi auto's. I will loosen up with time and use. The same goes for the safety, a little stiff as of right now.
8/10 for me, each user the gun with fit a little different.

Sights: This is one of the only things I have not liked about this gun. It has a very cheap plastic front bead and it is very dull and does not gather much light. I also wish it had a secondary bead to line up the front bead with. I also like to put a aftermarket sight on my guns. The front part of the rail is not vented and solid. So I could not put my aftermarket from sight as far forward as I wanted. "note the picture" Also the front sight is glued in so I can not remove it. I think it will still work but I am not very pleased with it not being a full length vented rib. Will it be fine for most shooters? yes! That being said it was one of the only things I have not liked about this gun so far.
5/10

Accessories: I am very happy with the stuff that came with this gun. It came with 5 choke tubes- skeet/improved cy/mod/full and the extended x full choke. All as a standard option with this gun. The 4 regular chokes seem to be of nice quality. The extended seems to be a little less quality with the finishing work and paint job on it.
9/10

Price: This gun sells in most stores for 530.00. I find this to be a very fair price for what I have seen so far. I was able to get this gun NIB for 399.95 and after shipping and transfer fee's I ended up pay 460.00. So for a value of what you get with this gun I give it a
9/10

Recoil: I only shot 3 rds threw this gun to function test the gun. Being light is a great but it does mean more recoil. I shot a #6 3" #4 3" and a #2 3" threw the gun. The trigger felt great in this gun! The recoil was a bit stout but manageable with these loads and the recoil pad. I know with the turkey loads it will be much stiffer and I will write more about that after playing with the gun more and doing the 2ND part of the write up on it.
8/10

So on these 7 areas for the first initial tests and thoughts the gun scores a 58 out of 70 giving it a 83% overall. Mainly hurt by the quality of the sites. I am very happy with this gun so far but the real test will come on paper. I will follow this one up in the next week to come.
