Want South Rainier/William O. Douglas info.
« on: July 30, 2008, 05:50:15 PM »
I am new to this site; thanks Stan for pointing me to this site.  My partners and I are considering a September elk hunt in the far eastern portion of the South Rainier GMU inside the William O. Douglas Wilderness.  My online research points to the area south of Jug Lake and west of Soda Springs.  Any tips, ideas, stories, photos, etc. would be appreciated.  We'll do some scouting before we commit to the area.

Lots of people, not as many elk as there use to be, need horses or be in very very good shape.  Get as far off the trails as you can.

I can confirm that there are quite a few people.  I know of a few who head that way and they have commented that there has been a surge of people the past few years.  It is beautiful country though.  Definitely worth a hike into just to see.  I was in there earlier this year (second weekend in July) and there were five and six foot drifts around Jug Lake.  There was actually a drift across the forest service road that prevented making it all the way into Soda Springs campground by car.
