tac bolt knob install jig
« on: April 07, 2012, 08:10:50 PM »
Seeing rob post about the rifle he just finished prompted me to share this. It is a jig I built to install tac knobs on 700 bolts. I thought some of you might want a peek so you can do it yourself.

Simple to center on the mill....

I use an annular cutter to get rid of that old knob....

 Gone!.....

And thar she be.....

They are threaded 5/16-24 to match badger.....but you can do whatever pitch you want. Just blast and cerakote and call it a job!

That is pretty awsome, I would be interested in getting some bolt knobs for my 700s, I am not skilled enough to do it myself.

Looks great high country! You can probably open a business with that thing! I am sure a few guys would send you a bolt or 2 to have that work done!

Well carp, its all coming together..... slowly. I have put off buying guns and such (hard for me) to get the finishing touches to kick this baby off. It took longer than I wanted to gather all my eggs, but trying to do it with cash instead of credit when you are just a working class Joe with a family is no easy task.....but its coming together nicely.

Here is a bunch of pics I put up in a local forum.

I bet that stuff is not cheap! I bet your investment will pay off in the long run! I will have to dig around and see If I might have a couple for you to do later down the road. I am sure there is a few guys that would love to have you put one on there bolts!

How much do you charge? I have a Remington 700 223rem. Varmint that I would love to have tactical bolt handle installed
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

You know the big machines are pretty expensive, but when you put an order in to ptg or manson and the bill is $700.00 and it all fits in a book box......that is where the $$ goes bye bye. I dunno if I will ever even try to go full time, but it gave me a hobby that used my skills, and I am not so worried about a guy stealing my #4000 lathe as much as the 15 rifles it would have been.

I do spin the knobs myself, although if a guy with a cnc wanted to earn some $$.......I would love to skip that step.

I get $50 for a raw knob install and $75 gets you a knob installed and the bolt cerakoted graphite black. I can do any color, but at $40 a 4oz.bottle, I don't stock many colors.

This is one of my dream jobs. I have a feeling my GI bill is going to go into machining classes.
"Right now, I am thinking that If my grandmother was here, she would be lecturing me about how there are poor people in Africa, that would just love to have a Ruger, I would just say "Great, granny, lets just ship all the Rugers to Africa!"

Loving life in the Great Northwest one day at a time.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.
