found a SxS 20ga stevens for 300$... worth picking up?
« on: May 10, 2012, 09:52:20 PM »
i was at the local gunshop today and saw they had an older 20 gauge stevens side by side for 300 bucks. it didnt have removal choke, and there wasnt stampings of what the barrels were choked to. i think it might be a model 311, i didnt pay that much attention to it when i was there, but, its one of those things that i cant get out of my mind. the woodwork looks like new, case hardened reciever/lock

ive had the itch to get a 20ga sxs for a while, havent had the chance to shoot one, seems like it might be a good cheap way to get into it what do you guys think? it fits and swings pretty well...
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

i guess i am asking if 300$ is too much for an old gun like that
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

I'd say that isn't too bad.  Just go to gunbroke and see what they are going for there.

I just sold a 410 with a shortenned stock for $400.  It was a model 5100.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

For that price range- I would say its up to the buyer, you could go check out gun values and such but really the difference isn't going to be much so it really depends on how it fits the guy shooting it. Which brings up the next part of my answer. If you can't hit with it then you wasted 300 bucks.  But if it really does fit, and you can hit with it then it's priceless to you.  If it was me and I had the money, I would take the gamble. If it was $600 or more- I'd be making sure I could sell it and get my money back out of it.
This closet is taken- go find your own

Just looked at a bunch on GB and most of the buy it now prices ran 319 to 399 and wern't in the condition you described.  some of the bids were in the high 200's with time left.  I've seen a couple of these that have had the pistol grip remove and checkerred plus the forend reshaped and checkerred making them into a pretty nice double with an English look to them.
