new to bow hunting n in need of some insight in spokane.
« on: May 20, 2012, 03:27:57 PM »
after eviewing our laws in wa i have made the jump.i have sold my 1/4 bore pellet rifle and am shopping for a bow that i can hunt the area with.i first was looking at a bear legion rth package at cabelas.i am a big guy on a budget.they measured me out at 30 1/2 inch draw.i did some research n called valley archery yesterday due to it being a pro shop n after talking for awhile am really looking at the hoyt rampage xt long draw.i will be headin up there on tuesday to shoot a few n get a feel.any insight would be greatly appreciated.if i go with the hoyt its going to take me another month to get a sight n rest n what not but am willing to take the time if it is all that they tell me it is.i am told that i should pick and purchase a release right away to do my test driving.as stated i am completely new to all of this and would really love any insight as far as releases n bow experience between the legion n rampage or any others that may fit the bill.n really any advice in general.thank you in advance.i cant wait to hit our woods.

Look up the Archery place just north of Chewelah. Talk to Red, she's the owner. She know her stuff and won't sell you something you don't need. She used to shoot for Hoyt if I remember right. Get a used one from her and start there. This is where the bowhunters up here go. Plan on staying awhile so she can line you out and get you going. Stay away from Cabelas and those box stores. She has an indoor and outdoor range there too.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Don't worry too much about buying a used bow.  I've been bowhunting for over 25 years, and I've never bought a new bow: always used.  They depreciate faster than a new car off the lot will, and archers are gear mongers, and some just have to have the latest and greatest every year and take a significant loss when they sell used.

understood.im pretty open to anything right now.i do know that i am hard on my hunting gear.so that is one concern,as far as warranty n such.but bn my first bow id be willing to check something used out as long as i can get into a real sweet rig for a good price.my only other concern is that i dont want the elk around here laughin at me when i hit the woods with last years model,or something sub par.that would be embarrassing.

New or used- just make sure it feels right to YOU. I bought a bow that kept putting my back out of place just trying to save money- once I figured out that it was the bow causing problems I traded it in.
Find a bow- practice practice practice. level shots-uphill shots-downhill shots- shots in between trees Practice practice practice
And have a blast with it.

Elk wouldn't care and if guys say anything to you, tell them to pound sand. Nothing wrong with shopping and getting the best bang for your buck. Also, I bet Red would back her sales to you with a warrenty type of deal.

thats good to know camp.from all i read theres not much good said about sva but at the same time ill go talk to them.ive had great dealings with brocks gunsmithing n its hard to find a good review of them.but from what you say i think ill be headin north b4 i make a purchase.goin used may be my ticket into immediate shooting.i joke about the elk,but there is something to be said about a virgin piece of equipment at the same time.ive been spendin some time up north prospectin for minerals anyhow so it shouldnt be too far out of the way

anothe question thas comin to mind is does anyone in our area fair well on the deer or elk or black bear without a tree stand?i will not be able to afford one till next year i fear.in my younger years the mule deer up in davenport didnt seem to be too difficult to get close 2 n ive seen a crap tone of white tail close up this year in cusick but i know how that can change come huntin season

I've shot a lot of deer with a bow and I only had a stand 1 year, and the buck I killed was not from the stand. Not too sure on elk and bear.

Might not be a bad idea to look up the threads on here about Spokane valley archery.
