where to fish lingcod in a 12 foot rowboat?

i was told i was going to fly off to alaska the first week of may, so, i sold my glasply, and now i am with out a boat. i cant really afford to get anything special, and dont have the time or cash to fix an engine up. im going to pick up a 12 foot fiberglass skiff tomorrow afternoon for the cost of 40$ and 100 .223 rounds... not a bad deal

i live in anacortes, and i wanna go lingcod fishing, but am not sure where to go... im very limited becuase i only have a pair of oars (i might be able to get an 8hp honda over the weekend from my dads place) but, i was just wondering if there was anybody up in my area that could offer some suggestions as where to fish in rowboat

i know where i would fish if i had a motor and something a little more substantial, but, ive totally overlooked anywhere close to home that might offer decent fishing....

can you fish lings from shore?

I used to fish for lings and rockfish from the shore all the time, hit the jetties with some medium-heavy weight bass gear. I used to use 3/8-1/2oz jigheads and power grubs, midnight fire and glow/white both worked good. I've alse seen guys throw musky plugs along the jetties with good success for lings.

I had a 10 ft Livingston with a 8 horse Johnson set up nicely for fishing Point no Point for salmon, and lings on Hood Canal. I currently have a 13 ft Smokercraft and a 15 hp Yamaha. I would take it out for lings keeping a good eye on the wind/weather, and ensuring I had a good radio and all the safety gear was accessable.

In a row boat, it would be difficult to counter the tide I would think.

Here yah go......I've fished the area before and thought this may be a good suggestion. The bottom is nice and rock, close to the harbor, and holds fish.

I all I had was a 12" rowboat I would stick to lakes.

I used to fish the shoreline as a kid from the old livingston dingy also used to tie off to the bouy and fish for whatever was biting, and set out crabpots with the same boat.  I lived at madrona beach on camano Island we had both community access and private access (family has a beach house) the old livingston is still there and my son set crab pots and fished from a bouy last summer from it.

My trick was to row against the current up to the area where there were lots of big rocks during slack tide times so the drift would take me back to the beach house....admittedly this was the brilliance of a 14 year old girl but it was a way to fish when I couldn't get dad to take me in the 16 ft glasply with the million yr old evinrude

i think im gonna hook my HDS 5 fish finder up to a car battery and use the GPS and take a look around and see where the deepest spots are closest to shore, i think i found a rock pile and with some awesome bottom structure via google earth, but... we will see...

by god, if there is a guy who posted pics of successful lingcod fishing via a kayak, i can sure as hell do it in a skiff

I know you can do it, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. I know a lot of people do and are fine, I just had a scarey moment that reminded me of my mortality.  Be safe out there.

Yep...what Ripper said. I believe one life has already been lost up north. A small boat like that got dumped while trying to retieve a stuck pot. Three in the water and only two made it out. Even on pond water days the current can rip. I'd have a VHF and safety gear ready to go.

find nearshore pilings, jetties, kelp beds, etc. and you will find lings. You actually have an advantage of being able to get in reaaaaal close where bigger boats with expensive motors may not venture.

Keep in mind what others have mentioned: catching a fish is not worth your life!

That was my stepdaughters grandfather,funeral is tommorrow.I'm going to miss grandpa Jim he was a GREAT guy and Iv'e been having a little trouble with the loss mentally as to why .Please don't fool around in the salt chuck in a 12 footer,they were in a 17 foot boston whaler.Your vhf wouldn't have done you a bit of good the boat capsized and flipped in seconds throwing them out of the boat.Most likely a freak accident,I've spent the better part of 30 years on the water in runabouts and commercial boats and never had a close call......................... but

 Same here in my 22', when looking through the windshield looks like looking into an aquarium its pucker time.

jeep,,if you are planning on fishing your 12'er, stay close into shore, along the kelp beds, and the rocks. Good hard cover for the lings. Your 12 footer will be fine.. Hell I use to fish Pt. Defiance in a 10 foot john boat with a 4 hp motor. Yes I fished from the point, along the clay banks, the slag pile and the mouth of the Puyallup.. Good weather, good water = good fishing..

i was going out to pick up this lil 12footer i was talkin about fishin in

and i got ahold of the guy i was gonna buy it from, he was giving me directions, he said, call me when you get to a certain point, and he would give further directions

i got to the spot where he said to call from, and i called once, no answer, i called again, and my phone died, completley, like it totally fried, i still cant get it to turn on, so i drove around looking for this boat i was gonna get, and couldnt find it, so i went home boatless

thats some bad juju right there.... i think it was a sign to stay on land

seems like somebody was saying dont screw around in a 12 footer in the salt

Can You say Westport.  Spend $120 and Book the SLAMMER.
It was on fire for lings last Saturday, Some boats even came back with Halibut on a ling trip.

Row boat on the Puget Sound is not a dangerous thing.  Taken a 10 footer out shrimping and crabbing several times, but I also look at the tides and stay home when the weather is bad.  Being stupid can kill you in a power boat just as quickly.

You can walk to the end  on outgoing tide at point defiance, but make sure you head back before the tide comes in too far. You will be swimming if you wait to long to head back towards the beach at the park.
