Similar experience for me in 2008 when there was still only one bull season...I scouted hard in september and found bulls screaming everywhere...but come opening day there were hunters everywhere and the elk were pretty quiet and a lot tougher to find.  I think that 2nd tag might be good if you've got pack animals...after the first few days of pressure everything seems to move to the tough places.  I was curious if opening the season 10 days earlier (oct 1) would help (bulls more vocal and no deer hunters), but last years success was 48%...so Im not sure it helped much.

Honestly I just think they've killed too many bulls in there.  They really opened up the tags on bulls starting in '09 in both units 11 and 18 and last year people really started to notice the lack of mature bulls...  When you jump from an average of 43.5 bulls killed a year to 100.5 bulls killed a year, it doesn't take long to reduce the total number of bulls in the unit!

Hunt the second rifle bull season in 11 and you'll see I'm not far off....  there are still big bulls in there but there are OTC hunts that will have you working less to shoot a bull just as big plus you can hunt multiple seasons...

in an above mentioned unit that is so depleted people say..I saw a home vid of close to 90 different bulls and 5 harvested pics of big bulls and a 390+ that made it thru the season. alot dont put in the required effort in these units cause of terrain that is daunting

I ended up getting my sweet archery mule deer tag for December. Last year we saw herds of deer up there. Either sex too. Tough to shoot a doe the first day when you see 5x5's with drop tines lol.

I would love to see that video!  Was it all from a single season and how many of those bulls were 5 point +?  I see sheds near every year that come out of there and there are still some big bulls in there, but there definitely is NOT the same amount there was even two years ago.  I'm curious to see 2012's harvest data...

My dad drew Unit 50 November muzzleloader deer hunt. Anybody else draw that, this year or in the past?

I think he may of drawn 51, I don't think there is a muzzy draw in 50. There are some good bucks in 51 they are tough to find though.

Have any of you guys ever drawn the early deer tag for the Idaho Panhandle?

I drew the early Unit 1 tag in 2005.   It is a great tag, scout hard and you have the possibility of killing a hog.   I watched a 30-32" giant typical rub his velvet off and lick it of off the branches on opening morning of my hunt.  He was about a 3/4 mile away with a bunch of other bucks.   Went nocturnal after that.   Didn't get to hunt it much as I was in the Navy at the time, but saw a lot of nice bucks.   If you had the time to scout, you could find a giant and kill him opening moring.   I believe that the tag includes unit 6 as well.  Some good areas up above Avery.

Yep. You are right. Mistyped that one. I don't think he's holding out for a big one, per se. Just a nice 23-24" 4pt I think.

I am having troubles finding what tags are available through the second chance drawing that starts the 5th.  Can anyone provide the web link?

Thanks!
