MH Region 5 Damage Permit
« on: June 12, 2012, 02:41:19 PM »
I used up my master hunter points on the damage control open tag for region 5. I guess I probably have a 10% chance of being called and out of that, about 50% chance it'll be a shoot or just a harrassment. If anyone lives in Region 5 and has a monster bull damaging their property, please call the DFW!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Thought all those MH tags even the region tags were anterless only. Gonna have to bag that big old bull the general season way.

Wormfood is correct, those tags are all ANTERLESS only.

But, when you cut off the antlers, doesn't that mean antlerless?  :chuckle:

Ouch.....   And good luck!

I've drawn Hunt Master controlled hunts twice, as has my son.   We've both been called once, so I think we've beaten the odds.   I know way more guys who've never been called.

When we were called, it was actually a fun hunt.

My son drew a region 3 Hunt Master controlled hunt........  here's hoping.

The bad thing about those hunts is if you don't get called, you still lose all your points.

I had a friend who drew North Bend a couple of years ago.  He got a call and 5 days to hunt Mt Si golf course.  They gave him a golf cart and told him to drive it to tbe end of one of the holes.  He did, and shot a cow in the woods.  After he field dressed it, he wrapped it in a tarp, threw it in the golf cart and drove back to the clubhouse.  He gave them a hind quarter and loaded the rest in his truck.

What a hunt!

That's very true. But, I like the purpose of the MH program and this tag is in the true spirit of using hunters specifically where they're needed, especially with regard to improving the relationship between the private landowners and us.

This is not to say the R5 tag was my first choice, because it wasn't. I did apply for the Toledo tag and missed again. My motives are not completely altruistic!  :)

That’s why this will be my last year as a Master Hunter.  I also like the purpose of the MH program and improving the relationship between the private landowners and hunters but I’m not doing any good sitting home waiting for a phone call that probably will never come.  The WDFW has really hosed these damage control elk hunts and they’re hosing the MH who participates in them.

I’d stay in the program if I lived closer to the SW WA damage control goose hunt area.  That program is well run (mostly) but the drive is a bit far for me.

If you're in it just for the tags, (and I'm sure there's more in it for you than the tags), you're setting yourself up for disappointment. If not, whether you get a tag or a chance to shoot doesn't matter. We can always apply for the other tags that everyone has access to. The program has benefited me immensely and I have yet to harvest an animal with a MH tag or special hunt. I wouldn't care if they did away with the MH tags altogether and used us primarily for damage response. I'd just as soon see those set hunting opportunities go to the general hunting population  for increased opportunity for all of us.
