Black Cloud?
« on: August 10, 2008, 07:12:55 PM »
I bought a box of these today, 3 1/2 inch two shot.  Anyone have any experience with these shells?

I have not shot the 3 1/2's but the 3" shells worked. Both of these wads on this shot are from Black Cloud's they worked very well.

excellent penetration. i patterned them out of my nova and they did well. i jumped a mallard and it got about 3 feet off the water when i shot it in the back. pellets went through the breast bone where others normally stop.  worked wonders on those scoters :yeah: as well.

It's a skybusters dream, thats for sure!! You have to watch what after market choke tubes you use. Federal had a little clip about it on waterfowler tv. They say the wad wizards/patternmaster type tubes should be avoided because those kinds of tubes temporarely restrict the shot cup, releasing the shot faster, which is the opposite of what BC does. It's supposed to hold the shot together longer to help give you a tigher, more uniform pattern "down range". It doesn't pattern too well out of my extrema2, plus our shots are almost always inside 20 yards, so the stuff is useless for us.  :twocents:

I used the Black Cloud ammo last year on Geese. Won't use it again. Too much of the Breast that was bloodied {Jelly}... Had to cut out and throw away too much meat. Now if the birds had been another 10 or 15 yards further out, that might not have happened. No doubt terminal performance on birds.  :twocents:

I'm looking at buying a case of it.  I also noticed that they have a choke tube designed for them any thoughts on this?  I think it is probably just a gimmick!

I wouldn't go buy a case...get a box or 2 try it out, pattern it etc..  Its pretty spendy.  I'll just stick to my Winchester Xperts.

Yeah, you guys make more money than I do. I shoot the Expert, and the Drylok, a whole lot less cash per box.... I have been stocking up since last season....easier to pay a little each month, than to lay all that cash down come fall...

90% of the time it is cheaper to buy a case.  So if you save your money until the fall and make interest on it in the long run that is the most finacially smart way to buy. :chuckle:

Might be cheaper that way, but atleast this way my wife aint finding a huge ass hit on the VISA in the fall...  "Honey, look how little this is costing me!"  Besides, i keep finding steel shot at Sportsmans for 9 to 11 bucks a box... this aint too bad.... :dunno:

This will be my third year duck hunting, and our first with a dog, if my buddy gets him ready... To be honest with you, I will probably not joint the tourney, but it does sound really fun.  My goal this year is to help get that dog working well, and also to get my son on a few ducks.... Cant wait!

What the heck, I will atleast pass the idea by my buddy, he does not visit this site...

I shot a couple boxes of Black Cloud last season with mixed feelings.  Did the shot put down birds stone dead.....yes.  I shot BC mostly for geese and the shots were from 15 to 40 yards.

After shooting 2 boxes I  had less cripples, but the shot tore everything up.  When cleaning out the birds, it took me much more time to cut out and get rid of all the coagulated blood.  The shells will do  the job at putting birds down, but for me there is too much meat lost with how much damage the shot creates.
