602 dickey elk scouting
« on: June 21, 2012, 07:31:11 PM »
Hi all,
My hunting partner and I are planning to hunt the Dickey unit come elk archery season. We are going to head up and start scouting in the coming weekends. After doing some google earth scouting I think we are going to head to the hoku-ozette rd and try to head in to the unit just south of stoelzenberg. if anyone has any tips they are willing to give about the unit it would be much appreciated. This will be our 3 rd season with the first 2 up in cougar mt in the nooch. Still have yet to connect but have had some real good times trying.

Thanks all and good luck come season!

Maybe want to stop by the Rayonier building out side of forks.  It is off the la push road (110) and quillayute road.  A guy I knew would go there and talk to them and would get a map of the area.  They would tell him which areas would be getting cut around hunting season and the general activity.  It can get busy on those roads during the week, and lots of gates depending on which road you go in on.

No one at the Rayonier office in forks except field crew.  Call the WDFW Montesano office and tell them you need to talk to a bio about access to the Dickey unit.  There are several ways in.

Thanks guys. I looked up the bio and have called her like 5 times. Left messages but haven't got a call back. Ether she is on vacation or hates hunters.

Call the region 6 office 360-249-4628.  Just tell them that you want to talk to someone about hunting access in the Dickey.  I bet you get a call with in a couple of business days.   Make sure you say hunting access.  "Key phrase" and should get you to the correct person.  If it does not work pm me with your contact info and I will email to him.

Something else for that area when scouting is fuel.  There are so many roads all over that unit, that I've covered a few hundred miles and burned close to 30 gallons in a trip in that GMU.  If I remember correctly the closest gas from Hoko-Ozette was in Clallam Bay, but the pumps didn't take credit card so had to get there before 6 pm.  The next closest was either Neah Bay (right as you enter the rez) or down by the 113/101 intersection (pumps on the side of the road--take card but were kind of expensive..think it was because they were ethanol free).
Also, times when I've been in there the are was getting hunted a lot at night, lots of clearcuts being spotlighted (guys from the makah).  You can usually talk to them in between clearcuts and get info on the herds.

great area might want to try the other side and check out around the mainline by beaver just be careful of log trucks and chip trucks they move right along back there and can make for an exciting event coming around a corner. Other than that there are a lot of elk in there but not a ton of bulls and you will have other pressure but getting behind gates is key and a good bike will make it easier!

Somebody help me! I was of the understanding that Rayonier now leases their land :dunno:?  I know people that have bought leases in there. Maybe it is not all of their land? Or have they stopped the leasing?

Well some of it is their land and some of its DNR. I got maps off of GO HUNT and the clallam County website to discern what is what.  Then you can go to the Rayonier website  and look at their map and see what in this unit is part of their lease program. They have a very small portion that is leased but most of the rest is gated but publicly accessable.

I think the big block of leased land is in 612.  602 is so fragmented between DNR and Rayonier you can keep going in and out of a lot of the segments.  Most of the roads that aren't gated have the sign that says private property and says you can do recreational things, but anything commercial to call a number.  The signs I've read in there were all from Rayonier.

They own approximately 400,000 acres along on the wet side.  Less than 75,000 is lease or permit access.  At this time the rest is open for public access.  Some motor some nonmotor.

May that for which I prepare never come to pass.
