New arrow build has 7.9% FOC. What to do now?
« on: June 30, 2012, 11:07:24 AM »
So I recently bought Easton's FMJ (340) arrows.  I cut them, glued the inserts and put on some blazer vanes.  With my 100 grain montecs, the FOC is 7.9%.  My other arrow was at 9% or so, and they flew pretty good (haven't killed an animal yet, so I don't know how the penetration is).  I have no wraps, or any other funky stuff on the rear end of the FMJ's.  I shoot a PSE bow madness 3G at 65lbs.  So my question is: should I up the broadhead weight to 125 grains?  The crappy thing with that is I already have a boat load of 100 grain target tips and broadheads.  I haven't paper tuned my bow with the new arrows yet, and I'm wondering if I need to do that?

Do they shoot good with broad heads? If so no need to change anything IMO.

Id see how they fly......heavy arrows usually require heavy broad heads....My way of thinking is, if Im gonna shoot carbon, Ill shoot carbon.  If Im gonna shoot aluminum, Ill shoot aluminum.  Too much marketing gimmikie stuff in archery..... :twocents:

Shoot it first and see how they fly. 7.9% sounds a little low. 125s will most likely assist you a bunch. There is also some weights that can be added to the tip and you can still shoot you 100s.
Don't spend your last day on earth saying "I wish I would have"

Mine are similar, I shoot 85gr. Thunderheads and have not had a issue with penetration.

I'm going to finish fletching the rest of the arrows and see how they shoot.  Where do I find broadhead weights at?

If they shoot good with the broadheads dont worry about it. Yourr going to get killer penetration. Your probably at around 450 grains on your arrows right now. If you have issues with them not shooting well then I would look into getting the front end heavier.

Never heard of a broadhead weight but muzzy makes brass HIT inserts in 50gr 75gr and 100gr.

Do I need to paper tune my bow again since the arrows are at different weights and sizes?

Mine are really close to that.  I shoot 85 gr Montec's on an FMJ 400 with a wrap and 3 blazers.  Those arrows are darts!  If your bow is tuned you'll never notice a different from a higher front of center.  I'd stick with it personally.

Same setup here without the wrap.
