4 Oregon Elk Points....Input Requested
« on: July 06, 2012, 08:02:07 AM »
Question is do I take the sled springs tag next year with a guaranteed draw or save up for the Starkey or another unit.  I am all ears and would love to see what others have to say.  Thanks for your input.

Are you flinging arrows, or lead?  Are you meat hunting or holding out for a big-un?
Nothing witty here.... move along.

I will be using a rifle and I am willing to hold out for a 300+ bull but not necessarily needing a complete monster.  A lot will depend on what I get in Peaches Ridge this year in WA but that is my mindset for now.  Thanks for making me clarify, I should have done that in the beginning.

Thanks

I don't know that area at all.  What can you share about it?

I’m in the same predicament. I don’t want to wait 8 or 10 more years for a decent tag. My wife will be at 9 next year so she should get her hunt.

I’m not sure I’d do much better in a 4 or 5 point unit than I would a 1 point unit.

I was looking hard at sled springs for next year, I might have to make a run down this year during season to see what the happenings are like.

I would do Northside 1st season rifle bull if I had 4 points. I've done the second season hunt either sex and shot a raggy 5 point on the second day. Finally hit into the elk on the 4th day and my buddy killed a 5. My dad's knees were giving him hell, so he couldn't get after them like he wanted to, but we still got into elk. Have seen good bulls scouting and bowhunting in there and have had friends kill a couple of toads. I just checked ODFW points summary and 4 points is 100% draw on that hunt.

A non resident will not draw the Starkey with four points. Statistically we should have drawn with seven points. We ended up needing eight before we drew. Beware...the Starkey may issue 400 or so any bull tags but they issue something like 2300 spike tags during the same hunt. So this is not a limited access hunt. It seemed just a like a general hunt to me. Camps and hunters everywhere. I'll never put in for that tag again unless they change that. Then they have a Nov spike only general hunt.
Can't we all just get along?

Agreed.  We took my uncle in there last year for his last elk hunt and it was a circus. I wouldn't take that hunt if I could draw it with three points, but it takes eight or nine. Unless you have a secret hole in that unit I wouldn't waste your time.

Thanks for the input all.  Sounds like I am getting closer to narrowing it down.
