HELP - Utah youth any bull tag
« Reply #15 on: July 16, 2012, 10:49:24 AM »
I think since he knows the Gorge, I would highly look into the north side of Gilbert Peak - China Meadows east. I hunt this area with family and run into elk every year I go! Look at the China Meadows area and move east along the WY/UT boarders!  Good luck, any thing else let me know.

I guide in Utah every year and know the north half of the state very well. Most of the large bulls are in the Limited-Entry units or on private land in the general units. The general units have some fairly good hunting for spike to 5 pt bulls, but as I said you can find bigger bulls on private land in those units. Have your brother-in-law ask around and try to get access from some friend or acquaintance for private land. If that fails, I would hunt the Uintas.

This whole area is good but Limited-Entry or CWMU, no general tags.

Just looked at the areas for Utah Youth Hunts,  have to say its not  the best areas. The only area that overlaps with places I've hunted are the Henry Mountains. My advice is to find a large cattle rancher or farmer, ask around.  I wouldn't be so worried about getting a huge animal in the available hunt units, rather just try to find a herd or any sign, I'd ask at the local coffee shops early in the mornings (look for ranch trucks in the parking lots), let them know you just want a shot at one...  take a map and they often point you to a few canyons to scout. Buy them coffee and doughnuts first,  it goes a long ways.  Sorry.
PS. "Desert hunt," don't hunt like your in the trees. Big difference.
Hunting, Basketball, Cars.... not much more for me to talk about.

Optics is where it's at, find good vantage points and glass, glass, glass. If I remember the season timeframe correctly, you should be able to call too.
