First Bear for me!
« on: August 03, 2012, 05:45:23 PM »
It's a little sow, but after I watched it for about 20 minutes feeding on berries, I decided it would be a great first bear. I was planning on quartering my bear if I got one and I had to work the second half of the day so time constraints and ease of handling helped me to shoot. I got this bear at about 8:20am this morning with a broadside shot at about 30 yds that went through the top quarter of the heart and both lungs, My 12ga slug passed through, and the bear settled down not 10yds away. I reloaded for a follow up shot but after about 30 seconds of letting out steam it was over. I was in deep prayer and awe struck thanking God for his amazing creation and generosity. I quartered the animal up and packed it out on very steep terrain, that little bear felt a lot heavier than I thought it would! I have the quarters cooling in my shop fridge and am ready to learn something about processing and storing bear. Thanks to all the people who post with their experience and expertise on this site! It has tot me a lot!

Nice job. I like the choice on the pics as well. Is that an H&R 20? I have one and some of the slugs would be some good bear medicine. Hook a brother up and give us the full story! Congratulations....sounds like a great first bear.
