bear scat
« on: August 18, 2012, 06:36:41 PM »
i was on a logging road today there was a pond or a spring as there was water comeing off the hill right above the clear cut with a clean cut path to it. so i could tell the elk and deer in the area were useing it. there was alot of scat on the road alot of it looked fairly new. it had alot of seeds in and some    wild berries in some. i looked at the black berries bushes and did not see any berries on any of the bushes. i will take some pictures and let you guys look at them and see if it is bear scat or coyote scat.i almost forgot to mention the scat looked like it was almost black.. the area is a big clear cut with steep hills it is dnr land so there are vehicles that come up and down the roads once in a while. my question is do you think bears would walk this road even though equipment and trucks go up and down that mainline road off this side road where i saw the sign. im new to bear hunting and im trying to get my son on a black bear before he loses interest. would i be better off to find huck patches up higher to have a better chance at seeing one. thanks

If you are seeing that much sign and there is that much traffic on the main line I'd assume most of the activity and sign you're finding is during non hunting hours....  :twocents:  Find out where there isn't road traffic.....

I have driven up a road to find a spot to park and turned around gone back down same road only to find a huge pile of fresh bear poop in middle of road not more than 20 min later

Seed and color do not always mean they are feeding on blackberries. Cascara, Salal, Oregon Grape and others will make black, blue or purple poo and they all have different sized seeds.

Bears will walk roads to travel as well as feed.

unfortunately on this road as me and my son looked at it on google earth it goes about 100 yards and come to a landing. to much vehicle traffic in this area we set up on a old landing above the clearcut and all we saw was were 2 vehicles and the dnr fire truck cruising the roads looking for hot spots. looking for another area to cruise in on are mountian bikes that is gated. going to head closer to the coast. tommorow or next saturday we will check out another area but it may be closed due to all acess due to fire danger we will see. thanks
