49 Degrees North Spring Bear Hunt
«
on:
April 06, 2013, 03:13:53 PM »
After trying to get drawn over in the Huckleberry for past 3 years, I finally drew my spring bear tag, but got my third choice of 49 Degrees North. I've been with my brother to Huckleberry twice for his hunts, but never ventured over the highway to 49 Degrees. I've already got some great info from another member here to get me started, but was hoping some of you might be able to provide some additional insight into the unit.
Is it similar to Huckleberry? Such as the private land situation and similar terrain? I've planned two hunt trips, May9-12 and May 31-June 2 in case I don't seal the deal the first time out. Will this time of year be good? I know we didn't have very favorable weather in 121 in May. Are there plenty of areas to setup camp or would I be better off finding a motel and driving in each morning?
Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated. Not looking for a bear tied to a tree, I want to earn my trophy. I have no problem putting miles on my boots either while I'm up there.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Hope to see some spring bear success pictures soon!

Wow, nothing?
Well, I signed up to stay at Bearpaw's place and get a DIY map. I'm stoked for the trip and hope I can update this thread with some success photos.

For future reference, there are lots of places to camp in that area. A couple small motels in Chewelah and might be one in Cusick/Usk on the other side as well. I have never been up there this early in the year though so I cant say really what it will be like with the snow level and such. If you can access it, check out the ski hill.

Good luck. Just got back from 4 days in Huckleberry. No bears/sign yet. Had a blast behind the binos tho.
Saw a bunch of moose and turkey tho.

We ran into a young moose a couple years ago. It actually spooked a bear we were attempting to put a stalk on. Climbed up the hill and came around a bend, and the moose was bedded down under a tree. Jumped up real quick and took off. No bear to be seen after that
A few years prior we were up there as well, and we saw tons of turkey. Funny thing is, we weren't seeing any bear on that trip, but when we ran into turkey hunters, they would ask if we had seen any because they weren't
Funny how that works sometimes.
Good luck on your hunt

I hunted 49 yesterday and saw a real nice boar, didn't close the deal, today got blown off the mountain, lots of snow up high and with the cooler weather moving in it may be a few weeks before its gone.

I know where, just don't know how to explain it on an online forum. If I had the time I take you out, sorry.
