What am I doing wrong.
« on: October 19, 2013, 09:38:53 PM »
I'm not an expert bear hunter. In fact this is the first year I have gone out specifically for a bear. The two I have gotten were just the right place at the right time deer/elk hunting. I have combed through countless posts on here, studied maps, read articles and spent hours and hours scouting and hiking this year. I have seen some sign, mostly older stuff not to fresh, but have yet to lay eyes on a bear.

Been hunting in capital forrest and found a nice cut for my buddy to sit on, went through the trees a bit and found some nice huckleberry and blackberry patches with Salal brush but we haven't been able to connect. Trying to get him the grand slam this year but without some serious help I don't think we are going to get it done.

Any other pro tips, suggestions or encouragement offered is greatly appreciated. Someone with a little time to show us how to do it is even better. Next outing is Wednesday morning, if you want to hunt with us I will feed you and keep you hydrated. If we knock one down then I am buying drinks.

In my opinion it's best to do your bear killing before deer season starts. Too much activity out there now, especially if you're huning Capitol Forest.   :o

I lived in Oly, hunted capital forest all my life. I lost interest as I grew up, I would suggest you get a quad to be successful. I know alot of guys that shoot nice animals, and bear, in that unit every year. But the hunt really isn't that good, I would head east. Hit highway 12, lots of great areas to get bear and big blacktail. Hit the high country, 5000'+, you will find your bears and maybe a boomer blacktail

We dropped a good Mulie first day of the modern deer season  we are sually out there in the middle of the week to hunt so it's not crazy packed out there. Last time we went out we saw 4 trucks and 3 of them were logging trucks. I have been continuations going out to the Humptulips area this week to try a day or two out there buy don't want to have the feeling of wondering if that was the day it would have payed out to stay closer to home.

Do you hunt them like deer/elk and do your hunts in the early morning and afternoon/evening or are they on the move all day now?
