Archery during Modern??
« on: February 13, 2014, 08:47:23 PM »
Okay, I know you CAN hunt with your bow during modern firearm season...
My question is: how many of you have, or currently do?

The only things I can think of that would change are: time of year, number of hunters, hunter orange, pressure.

I think I am going to take the plunge this spring...
Yoda says: "do or do not: there is no try..." You think it's worth it for a newbie to take the bow along to try, or wait til next year?

For Pete's sake...pick up your feet, man!

I have done it a couple of times. It is fun but depending on your area the archery season can still be better.

Theres times and places where you're better off in a tree, no matter if its with a slug gun or a bow........animals hide travel and bed in the thick stuff..........

It is more challenging, but if you get into the backcountry, it can be positive.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

do it.  early arch : too damned hot and too many bees     late arch way too cold.  around here the late rifle is the best time to be at it.  no reason a guy couldnt kill a buck with his bow during rifle season.

I think it would depend on what you are seeking. If your goal is a pope and young whitetail you are best sticking to archery seasons (IMO). If you are after a pope and young Blacktail I think it's a great idea and opens up some of the firearms restricted areas both in the south sound and the north sound/islands. I also think Blacktails rut a little sooner and mature bucks are tougher to come by in the late season than the tail end of rifle.  If you are chasing mule deer the late season (archery) is very limited area wise so that may influence your decision.  :twocents:

All 5 of my blacktails I'v killed in the last 4 seasons could have been killed with a bow. Give it a shot, you might be surprised how close you can get to them when the ground is wet and the leaves have started to drop.

If you want to hunt the high country with a bow more power to you.  The high hunt  with a rifle is tough. The deer are few and far between, that said it can be one of the most rewarding hunts. Often times bucks are located at great distances and weather (fog) is almost always a factor.

it is a great time to hunt, the bucks are in rut towards the end of season, just make sure you have orange on, it is the law.

Good stuff...thanks guys.
The high hunt is a favorite of mine, I was just wondering if anyone's done it with a bow.
I think I might give it a go...on a quality hunt in 426 last season I got within 20 yards of 4 bt's...what a rush!
