Need a "new" used Canon camera body
« on: November 29, 2014, 11:37:47 AM »
I am looking for a "new" used camera body. I have Canon gear and several L series lenses. My current body is the 10D and is way out of date. I have been looking at the 7D, the 5D Mark 1 and the 1Ds Mark ii. My budget is $500-750.

My primary use is indoor events without a flash. I want to push the ISO to 3200 at least. I also have gigs shooting for several non-profits and a lot of that work is outdoors so the rain is a factor. I need the body to be weatherproof. I understand the differences between weatherproof and waterproof so you don't need to go into that.

I am looking for recommendations from those of you who have had these bodies and or other camera bodies that I am overlooking.

Thanks

There are tons of ridiculous sales this time of year on new gear.  Also others looking to upgrade what they've got.  Nothing beats full frame for high iso and low light performance.  Looked into a used 5d Mark II?

Oh shoot.  Adorama had the 60d on sale for $700 on black Friday.   Prices have gone back up since but they may go back down becofe Christmas again.  I got my best deal on my 6d from them on Dec 2nd last year. They price matched a package that bh was selling.   Adorama wraps packages more carefully than B&H.

Im nervous about buying a used  body. Not like used lenses   Deals are so good this time of year i would spend a little more to get a new body  :twocents:  don't buy used from a professional  :bdid:

Used 5D mark ii are running $1000+, a little out of my budget.

I will check Adorama and B&H for Christmas deals.

What is your current lens lineup? Have you thought of selling a lens or two to help finance a better quality camera body?   Sure a 60D or a 7D Mark I would have a better image quality than your current 10D but since I haven't shot it I'm not sure how much. In reading your OP you mentioned the 5D Mark I. I would pass on this if it's low light photos  you're after. Current generation crop sensors are going to handle low light noise as well as a decade old FF camera. I would consider a 5DI if you want a body for shooting razor thin depth of field photos since FF inherently is more shallow than a crop at any given f stop.

Other nitpicks. I like how the 60d lights up the AF in red like my 6D does. The 7d illuminates the focus point in black which I found difficult in some compositions. Otoh the 7d has a vertical row of control buttons for your left thumb along the back much like your 10d, and the 60d, 6d and a few others do not. I really miss this from my crop sensor camera.

Weather sealing: Pentax has this market cornered. Most of their cameras have about 80 weather seals on them! You can get a K50 at Costco with two lenses for $50 off right now. I wouldnt trust my 6D in a rainstorm even though it's supposedly got a few seals here and there. Lots of bad stories on the photo forums. The k50 tops out at 51,000 ISO but idk the quality of noise you'll get at that ISO. I would probably  buy the Pentax and gently  try it out in low light and return it to costco within 90 days if you aren't happy with the image quality.  :twocents:
