Anyone going to Summer camp?
« on: March 30, 2015, 11:03:13 AM »
Is anyone sending their dogs out to summer camp this year?

I'm driving from Atlanta out to Nebraska in a couple weeks to drop my 8 month old brit off to get ready for summer camp, which is held outside Ideal SD.  She will spend May and June getting all the yard work done and getting her birds nailed down, then it's off to SD for a summer full of wild pheasants, sharptail, and chickens.  At the same time, I'll be picking my older brit up so she can have a nice little vacation, and then she too will head out sometime in July to get ready for the fall trial season.  So far, my pup shows that she has what it takes, but the real test will come off a horse in the Praries of SD on those wily wild SD birds.  I'm hoping she turns out as good, or hopefully better than her mom. She's a touch bigger and a lot more white.  It's been a frustrating year running her mom in trials.  She's small and orange roan, and runs a big brace, which has led to her being lost a fair amount in trials, while standing on point.  Last year she was lost at Nationals, where 30 minutes in she was flat laying it down.  If my pup turns out as good as her mom, she should place more based on her color and size alone.  Camp is a long ways away, but I'm already getting excited to go out and see how my pup does.

How can they run on wild birds in the off season?

You can train on wild birds starting August 1st.  The trainer gets to SD in early July, and it typically takes 2 weeks to get everything in order.
