Another F150 problem
« on: June 04, 2015, 01:08:58 PM »
Occasionally when I start my truck (1997 F150 4x4) the starter makes a grinding noise.  The noise sounds exactly like if the engine is already running and you try to start it.  :yike:

It doesn’t always do this and it when it does after a try or two it starts – very annoying.

I’ve changed the starter and the solenoid – no help – I’m thinking flexplate is cracked or some teeth worn???  I can’t see much of the flexplate but what I've looked at looks OK.

Any other ideas?

Recommendation on a good mechanic to fix it in the Everett area?

I’ve had it in once and the shop couldn’t repeat the problem and found nothing.

Put a starter in it. when open look at the ring gear, but more than likely just the starter drive is going out.  :twocents:

Make sure you check the wheel bearing fluid first.

Bad teeth on the flywheel by the sounds.  If there's an inspection cover, get in there and check it out.

My 2000 does this occasionally too. Annoying and it almost always seems to happen around a bunch of people, making it all the more embarressing. Im not 100 percent sure on the problem but I think the flex plate is missing a tooth or two. I'm not going to worry about it at the moment because it has always started after it does this.
