New A5 cycling issue. Help
« on: October 26, 2015, 10:41:27 AM »
Hey all, for the life of me in cant figure out why my shotgun isn't cycling properly so I'm looking for some input.  When I fire the first shot the chambered round is properly ejected, how ever a new round will not release from the magazine tube.  What mechanism allows a round to be released from the magazine tube?  Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

A5s have a magazine cutoff switch.  Check the position of that.

This is the new model A5, they don't have that magazine cutoff unless they're are hiding it. ha ha

In that case, turn it upside down, push the “loading door” (I believe the correct term is Carrier) down to expose the magazine – you should see a spring loaded clip that retains the next round in the mag.  Push that in and the shell should release.  If you have an obstruction behind it you’ll need to clean that out.

If that doesn’t do it you have bigger problems and should see a gunsmith or talk to Browning.

CP:  No obstruction.  A shell will release when I manually do it and when I pull the bolt lock that's in front of the trigger guard, but not when I fire a round.

Timber:  These are all waterfowl loads.  3" 1 1/4 oz #4

I have one of the newer A5's and have experienced exactly what you've described.  It happened to me right out the gate, the first time I took it out to the range to shoot it.

I'll second what CP said about pushing down the spring loaded clip to release the next shell in the magazine tube.  I've had to do this plenty of times, especially when I had an issue with the bolt lock in front of the trigger.

It seems to me that my A5 is just "picky" about what shells it likes and doesn't like to cycle.  For instance, I do a lot of target shooting throughout the entire year, and for whatever reason my A5 will not cycle Rio shells.  But on the other hand, it's never had any problems with Gun Clubs (which is fine by me, because they're great for reloading).

I don't know what actually causes the cycling issue to happen, but I found that by shooting different shells I was able to figure out which shells cycled and which ones didn't.  The crappy thing, is that the shells that cycled tended to be the more expensive ones.
