Just got to Jblm looking to catch salmon
« on: July 14, 2016, 04:47:19 PM »
Coming from the east coast. I'm looking forward to catch some salmon. I'm probably limited to fishing from shore unless I can find a cheap guide. Where should I start gear and location wise? Looking to start fishing immediately.

I haven't done any bank salmon fishing in a long while, but when I got into steelhead fishing I just showed up where people were, looked at what they were using, what they were doing, then copied them and started catching fish.

Bad year dude.  Sorry.  Not many fishing opportunities this year.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

Jump in the car and start heading to either the Cowlitz or to the Wynoochee...for summer steelhead, at least until Sept when other rivers really get some salmon runs going, like the Humptulips, Lewis, Kalama, Klickitat, and such. Unfortunately the days of heading to a local Puget Sound River and catching salmon are almost over...but if your willing to drive a bit there is still some great fishing. Steelhead fishing by drift fishing or floating jigs will get you into practice for salmon fishing (drift fishing for salmon or floating eggs instead of a jig are top producers for the bank bound angler). Also check out some of the fishing related websites, such as northwestfishingreports.com piscatorial pursuits and ifish.com for info...oh, and youtube has a bunch of videos too.

Good luck, and thanks for your service!

thanks a lot for the valuable input. I don't mind driving to catch fish. Salmon was the target species because I went to Lake Ontario a few times when I was younger and got hooked on pulling on kings. especially fishing them in the rivers. I love fishing in general so catching steelhead sounds great to me and I also can't wait for spring walleye (best eating fish there is in my opinion)
