Training Clubs
« on: December 27, 2016, 10:12:46 PM »
Hey Guys, thanks to your recommendations earlier this year, I've got a pup headed my way from Sky River Goldens in Ellensburg this spring. The little guy is due in February, so I'm looking at an April pick-up date.

My plan is to have him hunting ducks with me by December of 2017.

This is my first duck dog and I want to make sure that I do things right. I hunt A LOT and I hunt HARD. I want to make sure I give the little guy a real chance to shine in his first year in the marsh.

I know that many of you have trained multiple dogs and know more than any YouTube video or book could teach me and wanted to know if there are any retriever clubs that I should check out in the state. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Well you have Cascade HRC in Snohomish as well as Whistling Wings HRC in Fall City. Also Newaukum Retriever Club down near Centralia/Onalaska. I went to at least one training day by all 3 clubs last year and all were extremely friendly and welcoming with lots of serious retriever folks.

I am a member of WWHRC so that's my "home" club and I train pretty regularly with a lot of its members.

My pup was born in Feb. 2015 and I was able to hunt him in Dec. 2015 although he saw very limited situations and locations as he was steady, but basically ran only short land blinds with only 1 or 2 guns shooting. By Dec. 2016 he is full on hunting and running blinds land and water as well as quartering when we only have a general idea where a bird fell.

A lot depends on what level of training you want to achieve. So think about setting some goals for training and don't worry about a time line. If he's ready to hunt then he's ready but don't rush it if he's not.

First training days should be starting up in Feb. Pm me if you can't find dates and locations. A lot of what you need to work on can be done in soccer fields or parks. I atribute much of my success from advice I got on this forum from experienced members as well as using the hillman puppy dvd and having a pro train me to train my pup once a week.

Newaukum River Retriever Club typically has training days every month throughout the year.

Jan 14th is our next one.
