Looking for a new shotgun
« on: May 05, 2017, 02:33:45 PM »
I know there are other threads on here for the same subject, but with some new models out I'm looking for more info. I'm looking to buy a new autoloading shotgun for next hunting season. It will mainly be a waterfowl gun, but also be used for upland/doves etc. I think I have it narrowed to three guns: SBE3, SX4 and A400. I only list the A400 still because I really want to like it. I've heard a lot of good about it, but it feels kind of big and bulky to me, and I'm not sure I want that for upland/carrying very far. I do have a favorite, but have not made a final decision yet. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was in your same position 3 years ago.  I was planning on the A400, but decided to go to the store and shoulder a number of guns including Benelli, Browning, etc. as well.  I ended up walking away with the Browning A5 in Mossy Oak instead.  Mainly because I liked how it handled, and how the "hump" aided in faster target acquisition for me.  But you can't go wrong with any of the choices you listed.  All great guns.

I've got a benelli m2 and an sbe 2. Can't go wrong with benelli in my opinion. Very simple design and they flat out work. Not to mention that I haven't found a better fitting gun (for myself).

I know its not one your considering but I picked up a stoeger M3000 2 years ago and haven't had a single problem for the last 2 waterfowl seasons.  Stoeger is a sister company of Benelli and it has the same inertia drive system as the M2 but is half price.  I picked mine up on sale at cabelas for $399

A400 is very light, but caries like a 2X4.  Outstanding pit gun, but falls miserably as an upland gun AND the safety is in front of the trigger guard and that leaves your trigger finger out there by it's lonesome freezing it's butt off.

I thought it would be a great all around gun... but no.  It is a masher on coyotes too, but my Ithaca 37's have it to heck on upland birds.  Not a bad target gun either.
