Is it ok to blowfish for carp in the Palouse River?
« on: June 27, 2017, 01:12:31 AM »
We are heading there in a couple of days and my 10 year old wants to try it out. I've never seen anyone do it and always figured it wasn't legal, but I don't see anything saying you can't.

I will be over there in a few days also. Cant wait. It will be my first trip there. So excited. Ill be bringing the bow for carp. Bow fishing is legal for common carp in washington. When good numbers are around its a blast.

Ive never blowfished before. Does WA require a blowfishing permit, blowfishing endorsement, and special blowfishing permits? :chuckle:

I really hope that this isn't a typo!!! Please take a video of your son Blowfishing for carp!!! I can just imagine a 10 year old with a blowgun wading around shooting darts at carp, that would be awesome!

If it is a typo and you are talking about bow fishing you will want to pick up a cheap bowfishing setup with a reel and proper arrow tip setup etc... and tell him to aim about three feet in front of where he thinks he should aim, at least...

I can't imagine why it would be illegal. No season, limit, license required. They considered an invasive species so I'm not really sure that anyone would bat an eye, except to ask about your equiptment, how it compares to bow fishing etc.

I would imagine only small carp would be taken since lots of big carp pull through or wiggle off massive  barbs on bow fishing gear.

I called a gamie a couple years ago to ask if it was legal to bow-fish for Carp.
He said have at it.
As the water starts warming the carp move into the shallows to spawn.
I've tried fishing for them during the spawn and they ignored everything.
They were rolling and thrashing - good opportunities for a bow, or blower!

Carp don't get going until like May or even June.
A remarkable experience is one where the pain is forgotten so quickly, the frustrations and struggles are forgotten the minute you’re done.

I can’t wait to do it the next time.

I never heard that before about Roosevelt?

I would call WDFW and ask them about the blow fishing!  :twocents:

I used to bowfish carp on lake roosevelt, they made it illegal back in the 90's.  Other means of taking carp are legal, it specifies "bow and arrow fishing" so you could blowgun carp.

The NPS made the ruling not WDFW

My understanding is they outlawed it because "people" were complaining about carp carcasses laying all over the banks.

It is on page 92 of the new regs.

I used to bowfish too. The NPS is a thorn for everyone who lives in this whole area!
