Best route to Casper?
« on: October 12, 2017, 10:17:22 PM »
We are headed over to unit 73 in Wyoming to hunt pronghorn leaving tomorrow morning. Does anyone have any input on the best route as far as mountain passes or other concerns? Once we get past twin falls is it better to head towards Ogden Utah or up toward Idaho falls? As far as time they are pretty much the same.  We will be starting on I 84 and pulling a toy hauler. Thanks for any input!

Pocatello to Soda Springs ID to Kemmerer and Little America WY.  East on 80 then north to Casper

From Western Washington I always go 90 all the way to 25 and then south to Casper. I'd be surprised if there is a faster route.

He states that they are starting on I-84, so that kind of take 90 out of the equation

I'd go the route through the corner of Utah. The other way is going through Jackson and Grand Teton National Park, which is not a good way to go if you're pulling a trailer. It's very steep and mountainous. I'd only go that way for the scenery. The other route would be much better with your trailer.

I used to work in Kemmerer all the time.  If you turn at Pocatello and go thru Soda Springs, you miss out on that little corner of Utah and hit I-80 at Little America.  If you continue into Utah, you either have to go to Lagan and up Logan Canyon to Bear Lake, or down to Ogden and up Parley's Canyon, then to Evanston.

Really depends on your starting point, however it is hard to beat I90 to I25 from almost anywhere in the state.  Montana is much more relaxed on speed enforcement than Oregon and Idaho IMHO, there's something to be said for setting the cruise control at 85 and crossing 555 miles of Montana in 7 hours with one stop for fuel and potty breaks.  Have made that drive dozens of times.

However, if you must start from I84, take I80 to Rawlins and 287 to Casper.  Pass weather would be my determining factor in choice of routes.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

If a guy lives close to I-84, I sure wouldn't drive north to I-90. That can be a nightmare, just getting to I-90.

I missed the reference to starting on I-84; my apologies. Starting from the Puget Sound area I-90 would be quicker in most instances.

I done both routes

I would definitely take I 90 through Montana this time of year
