Loading for a 45/70 question.
« on: March 23, 2009, 06:49:07 AM »
I bought some 350 grn Oregon Trail laser cast bullets for my 45/70. Do I need to worry about gas checks or wadding? I was looking through my manuals and some lead bullets call for wadding. Better yet have any of you used these bullets? Got any recipes???

If they needed gas check,s I think they would have been crimped on during the sizing. You should check out marlinowners.com , there are is more than a few very knowledgable folks there that very sharp when it comes to the 45-70 marlin.

I got answers on another site. Speed dictates the need for a gas check. If you keep them at moderate velicities they don't need them.

Gutpile - there is a 45-70 shooters club that shoots out at Spokane Valley Range @ Mica.  I bet if you went out and talked to Joel, he would be able to tell you when they shoot and get some insight from those folks.  Many of those guys shoot combinations from straight black powder to smokeless and combining the two for speed and accuracy. I was watching a couple of these folks hit the 1000 meter target every 3rd shot with peep sights.
These guys seem to know what they are talking about.

I don't know if what they told you is true or not, but I have never heard that before.  You should need a gas check unless it is a plain base bullet.

i have had and been reloading the 45-70 for 6 years and never heard of a gas check?
is it only for lead bullets not jacketed?
or am i just a loser for not knowing about it?

A gas check is a thin copper or brass disk that goes on the bottom of a lead bullet to prevent hot gases from cutting into the lead.  It is not needed on low velocity lead bullets or any jacketed bullet.

Don't know but the company I bought the bullets from answered my e-mail and said the same thing. Depends on how fast you push them. Lead bullets arent really made for magnum type speed. They sure are fun to shoot though.  :chuckle:
