Not much of a story to tell since I was checking in during the hunt, I was pretty depressed the past couple days before I killed my bull.  The moose were just not around or responding to any calls.  Met up with Ben that morning and he was sure we were going to kill a bull that day!  At that point I’ve put over 1,800 miles driving the roads, everyone said to drive the roads, moose will be on them.
That day since I started hunting was the first time we saw a moose while driving, we surprised a cow coming around the corner, good start to the day!!  We did see 2 cows in a reprod cut but no response or sight from any bulls. We jump back in the truck with Ben driving and me riding shotgun.  The roads up there are not truck paint friendly, I’m scared to wash the mud off to see all the scratches, but every scratch was worth it! After driving down a road I had previously turned around on because of the brush, I told the guys that I just didn’t think I was going to kill a bull on this trip. Then seconds later we turn a corner and Ben days, big bull, shoot that ...Sucker.  I hear my buddy sitting behind him say, Holy ...Crap!  I can see the bull but some of the antlers are blocked from my view, the bull is standing just off the road.  I know by bens reaction that I need to shoot this bull with no question, so I get out of the truck, load my .300 win mag ( expecting at any moment the bull would run off) and put my crosshairs on his shoulder!  The whole shooting in the hump shot went out the window, instinct kicked in to shoot it in the oxygen factory. The bull humped up and walked down the road, I ran up to where he was standing and he had gone 20 yards down the road to just off the road on the other side.  I put two more shots in him before he finally went down!  I didn’t realize just how big he was until I walked up to him, no shrinkage, just amazement.
I was speechless, all the hard work, scouting, miles, money in the tank, reading tons of texts and messages to offer help, it was all over in a few seconds.  My once in a lifetime moose hunt was over, and I couldn’t have asked for a better bull.  We hugged, high fives all around, and took pics.  We tried to load it whole but that wasn’t happening, maybe if we had another Ben size guy!!  So I gutted it and we cut it in half, still a chore to load.  After skinning and getting it into the meat locker, celebration time with coors and crown royal!!!   Too many people to thank on this hunt, the people on and off this site are just great!  Ben was the key to my success, I did put all I could into this hunt and feel great about my efforts, but having someone with his knowledge was priceless.  Can’t thank Ben enough, or my buddies who stuck around burning vacation time to be with me during my treck. Steve and Chris are life long buddies I’ve known since elementary school, now it’s steves turn to draw a moose tag!  Thanks again for everyone’s kind words, the support and thanks for every tip and private message.

Hope to fill the space with “success” in the future!  Still in disbelief that my buddy and I drew a OIL bull moose tag for the Selkirk unit. 21 years of applying, it was our 2nd choice, of course kettle falls was our 1st due to the world record being killed there last season!  Chris and I have been great friends since jr high school, maybe elementary.  We have both hunted moose together once before, back in 2001 in Canada. We had a tough hunt, dealing with the terrorist attacks and the lack of promised moose. I ended up killing a 2.5 year old bull and he got a huge cow. The hunt was bitter sweet, now, we are at it again. This has been a very tough year for both of us, I lost my uncle and we both lost our father in law ( we are married to sisters). Today, Chris learned his grandma won’t make it through the night, the same day his daughter graduated and the same day he found out he drew for a once in a lifetime moose tag. Wow.  I have so many questions about this hunt but will start with just one, what should our expectations be as far as numbers of bulls, and size?  Sorry for the long intro, the whiskey is finally taking hold!  Better go for now, thanks for all the congrats, support and the great info that has already come my way!
