Interesting. So 15 tribal tags and ten state draw tags and potentially a couple raffle tag hunter could be hunting that area.. It is a big area but with lower moose numbers the last few years I can see why some guys don't kill moose some years.. I assume those tribal tags go to tribal members only ?

Yes just tribal members. And my best guess is at least half donít get filled. A tribal member can draw multiple times so the incentive to take a moose isnít as high as with the state tags. My aunt didnít fill her tag last year for example.

The main reason the tribal and OIL tags go unfilled is because of the dwindling numbers of moose. What once was an easy filled tag requires a significant amount more effort or luck. :twocents:

Dwindling moose population and the fact that the lodgepole regen from 30+ year old fires makes it near impossible to glass across basins.  I have 24 points and my odds of getting drawn while I can still get out there are getting slimmer.  CCT members can also hunt wolves on the south half and the north half.  I'm sure they take more than our game department does and it doesn't cost us taxpayers 100K per wolf.

I'm not sure about a dwindling population of moose, but when I had my tag up there in 2015, a big chunk of 204, about 3/4 of 101, and a little of 105 were shut down for fires that burned over a million acres of ground.  I would think by now the young trees that make up a good portion of what moose eat should be growing really well and providing great feed.  Also, the open areas due to those fires should give some good spotting too.  The success rate's been pretty good every year, so I'd guess it should be good this year too.  I know i'd give my left you-know-what to have another moose permit in my pocket this year!

Wish I had a tag.  But last year my kid and I cut a road open after the first snow opening of muzzle season and found a few tracks.
I would like to call up one

Lonedave  I might have to scrounge up a new moose call.

I can assure you the moose populations are drastically down from when you had your tag. :twocents:

I don't doubt you one bit as I haven't been running around that country much the last 5 years.  I was mainly responding to the comments about the 30 year old burns.  They were pretty grown up when I hunted there, but with the fires prior to and during my hunt, there should be ample feed and more open areas to glass for moose now.  I also know the pain of the waiting game for a permit....I had been putting in for 38 years before I drew.

I will let your son use my Alaskan Moose Snare. I do suggest that he hunts with someone else. It should be self explanatory.

Seen a bull couple days ago.  Had a tennis ball size closed absess on left side just behind front quarter and an open wound high on right side rear.  Not sure if a bad shot?  Stood in pond for 30 minutes.
