Big Agnes Lost Ranger review
« on: May 12, 2020, 10:33:26 AM »
Does anybody run this bag? I have a $25 gift card and looking to get a new bag. I like the idea of having the slot to slide the pad into the bag as I have a tendency to move off mine or slide down to the bottom and it drives me nuts.

I don't have this bag specifically but I do own one a few BA sleeping bags. They are great and the pad sleeve is awesome! The only thing I dislike is that some of them do not go all the way to the top of the bag so your head does not rest on the pad. Nothing pillow won't fix though.

Good to know. I have a little inflatable pillow that I pack around so that shouldn't be an issue. I really want to Kifaru Slick bag but not sure I want to pony up the cash plus I need to burn the $25 gift cert

I have used the Lost ranger for the last couple of seasons. It is a great bag and haven't got too cold in it yet. The pad sleeve is real cool. I found that putting the pad in the sleeve when it is 1/4 inflated works the best.

I am 5' 9'' and the regular size BA bags fit me but it's not overly roomy. You might want the long.

My brother had a BA sleeping bag, may have been the same one and he hated it. He froze in it in our wall tent and returned it after one trip. I think he was using a BA pad with it as well.

I run the BA Mystic 15 with the Q-Core SLX pad.  I love the set up.  I added a thermolite liner and I feel like I can comfortably run it down to single digits.  I love the pad sleeve as I don't fall off the pad.  I agree it is best with 3/4 pressurized pad.  My pad goes the full length but there is some separation between the pad and mummy hood.  I just set me pillow in there and it stays.

The sleeve is cute and prolly killer for like rafting trips etc.   BA Bags are heavy, cold for weight, bigger than you think you need.   I'd hold off and do more research.

I guess that depends what one you get. My BA sleeping bags are right on par with my Therm-a-Rest and others in regards to size and weight. Zen-Bivy and Feathered Friends quilts that I have are nice too and they are all have some positives and negatives. One thing I notice on all of them is that they are not rated for what they are rated for. If you plan to test the limits of the bag you are going to freeze. at 20 degree bag or quilt is not going to be comfortable at or near 20 degrees. The problem is that is so subjective. There is no way to make a rating that is accurate for all because we all sleep differently. What is warm and wonderful for me is an ice box for my wife. The best thing to do is just get your hands on as many bags as you can and buy the one you think is going to work best. If it disappoints you just count it as a learning moment and move on to the next bag.

I have the Encampment 15deg & haven't been that impressed with it. It's only good for summer car camping. Heavy & sleeps cold.
I switched to the SG Chilkoot for my main bag.

My question for you would be do you like sleeping in a mummy type bag? Also does that type of bag allow a rectangular type of pad or does it have to be a specified shape. Sometimes those special shaped pads are more expensive. On my BA I had to use a 2 " pad unless I went with a wedge extension for a 3 ". Still a person who has claustrophobic issue might not like that type of bag if you turn a lot during the night :twocents:

I've been using that bag the last 3-4 years, along w a thermarest neoair.  The key is to get a highly rated pad since there's no down underneath you where the sleeve is.  Overall I'm happy w mine down to 25 degrees or so...but even there you need to have the face part pretty cinched down.  I'm sure there are better bags out there but I like not rolling off the pad and it's good value for the price

Had this bag for a week, then returned it. As a side sleeper it sucked to have to turn around in the bag.
