Kids Opening Weekend Success
« on: October 29, 2020, 08:38:19 AM »
Both of my boys were able to harvest bucks on opening weekend.

Trey (12) missed a buck opening morning but his 16 year old brother (Ty) was able to find a 3x2 buck bedded mid day on Saturday and shoot him in his bed at 264 yards.  After working the buck up, we loaded up our packs and hunted the rest of the day for Trey.  We weren't able to find another shot opportunity but enjoyed the day together.

Sunday was rainy and miserable, so we waited a bit to go out and didn't start hunting until about 11:00.  We were fortunate to have some deer bumped into us as we were hiking in that morning and only a little over half way up our climb.  The group had 3 bucks, a couple of 2x2 and a 3x2.  Trey was able to anchor the buck at 297 yards to complete out weekend success.  Sorry, the picture on Trey's isn't great with all of the rain and fog, also can't really see the 3rd with the straight on photo angle.

Awesome! is that the buck's bed all cleared out beneath him? Looks like an established snoozing station

way to go Dad  :)
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Today’s equipment is so good, kids seem to be great shooters because they hold so steady.  He regularly practices to 450 and killed his buck at 518 last year.  However, missed a bedded buck on opening day!

I agree.  My 13 year old can ring the gong at 500 nearly every time.  His 6.5 has ballistics turrets and a sturdy bipod (things never dreamed of when I was 13 on my iron sighted 30-30 Lever gun) and he puts several boxes of ammo through it every summer...
BUT... good old-fashioned buck fever  :o does not seem to have undergone any technological changes... ;)
