building new engine for jeep
« on: November 19, 2020, 07:45:09 PM »
I'm in the process of building a new 360 AMC for my Jeep.I got the main bearings today and noticed there are no tabs on the bearings to keep the from spinning in the main's.Has anyone seen this before?is it normal for AMC?This is the first AMC engine i've ever built. thanks

I think an old CJ with a 4.0 would be sweet. That motor seems like it's perfect for that platform.

If you are building it, a 4.0 Stroker would be very hard not do.

It really is a great set up,i loved the 4.0 it will be sent in and bored out rebuild it at a later date.lots of torque easy on fuel not enough to really break parts but climbs like a goat with low rpm.It was tired very tired, might have been producing around 40 to 50 hp when i pulled it.I started having to put it in 2nd gear to pull some of the grades around here on the main roads.I always wanted to try the v8 thing so i went full jeep to try it out see if i like it but can still just swap it back out just change exhaust.

No tabs on the bearings is just flat out scary. I would make sure your clearances are good, double the assembly lube, and prime the oil pump just before start up. Clevite is a good brand but I personally would return them and get tabbed bearings.

I just finished building a 5.0 and those bearings would add to the pucker factor when breaking in the cam. It was a long 20 minutes.

Let’s have some pictures so we can follow your build.

I haven't built a motor since high school, but that 20 minutes can be a real nail biter.

Or being a broke teenager who put every last dime into an engine.  :chuckle:

But that's what roller cams are for!

Enough with the election thread  :chuckle: :chuckle:

DOWN TO HEADS AND INTAKE.

That oil pan was the dirtiest pan i ever had to clean, the engine it came off must have taken out all the bearings. It had what i can only describe as lapping compound mixed with oil completely.  :chuckle: :chuckle: took hours in the parts cleaner to get the caked on compound all cleaned out.
