Thankyou guys! Planning on going to a small area I have picked out in the next few days, it has a few valleys and a ton of logging roads. Going with onx offline maps and making sure to pick up an compass and paper map in the next few days. Any recommendations on a decent compass? I do still have one question though! The land I wanted to check out has a locked gate at the entrance, I have seen people drive up there in the past and it has a public nature trail. Its listed on onx as being owned by the state of Washington also has dept of natural resources land and turns into green diamond on the fat side. Can I just park at the gate and walk up?

Just picked up a rifle (delayed nics still ) and looking to do my first ever hunting day in the next few weeks. I have not shot a gun or done anything related to hunting in the last 20 years so I am a little lost on where to start. I plan on sighting in the rifle and shooting over the next few weeks but dont know where to go, I checked onx for public land near mason county & it looks like there is a ton I would love to check out. I do have a few questions though..When using onx and public, dnr, green diamond land comes up how do I tell if it's a place i can actually use? Would there be gates blocking the entrances? I noticed a lot of the green diamond land has dirt roads, can you still hunt near the roads just not on them? How do you not get lost in the woods without spending a ton on a gps? I have always used trails in the past as a reference but never really climbed hills & moved super far away from some reference point i know.Any tips for a beginner to hunting?
