Preserving velvet?
« on: October 17, 2021, 09:22:34 AM »
Seems like there have been a fair amount of velvet bucks taken on the rifle opener this year. Has  anyone have any luck preserving velvet antlers at home? Just wanted to do a plaque or possibly a European  mount and thought it would be cool to try to keep velvet intact. Here is my buck from yesterday

If you are going to put the antlers on a plaque, cut them off the skull like normal and then put them in the freezer for a year or so.  My BIL did that to a real nice whitetail quite a few years ago and it still looks like new.

I cut mine off at the skull, then completely buried them in rock salt. I honestly don’t remember how long I left them in there, as it’s been 20 years since I did it, but they look exactly the same. I would guess I left them in that salt for a month.

They make a spray called velvalok. I think you just spray it on and you’re done.

velvet at this time of year should be real dry already. a stint in the freezer to make sure, but i'd bet it'll be fine.
